I've been told there were typically two steel players on this show (that's got to be a record for TV), Doug Livingston and Jay Dee. If it was a car chase, for sure it was Jay Dee, if it was a part that needed Doug's amazing sight reading for the steel, it was Doug. In any case, listeners got to hear two of the best steel players around. Those who could put up with the show long enough to listen (I never made it past the first 30 seconds of the show).

I remember a quote from Jay Dee that really made me smile.....

When the music director asked him if he minded if they got in another steel player who could read for some specifics they had in mind, Jay Dee apparently said - "I don't mind if you put steel players all around the room - as long as I'm one of them."

Doug (Earnest) was the obvious choice.

I played 6-string guitar on that show a couple of times. I was subbing for the regular guys. J.D. was on steel and Larry McNeely was on banjo.
