I know the Ace/Academy are of a brown color, but I have the only B8(mid 40s) in very dark brown that I've ever seen. Hard to tell inside, but if held in sunlight, it shows a completely brown neck/body, with a beautiful matchbooked chocolate w/black swirl pattern on the back. All others I've seen are bowling ball black. What's the deal? Anybody else have one similar to this? What was the Rickenbacher process towards pouring these?

My Christmas present ... a "T-logo" Double Six ... has the same brown/black swirl bakelite necks that you describe ...

I wasn't 'spose to "snoop" ... but it has been in the closet for two months ... who could resist

Here is a nice article on the History of Bakelite.

I've read that they used walnut shells as a filler and that they are ... at least partly ... responsible for its resonant nature ???

For the more technically minded... Bakelite Lab

For you history buffs here is a nice page that covers plastics ... in particular the aldehyde condesation polymers related to phenol formaldehyde (urea formaldehyde and melamine formaldehyde) ... Timeline

And not to leave out you manufacturing enthusiasts ... Compression Molding and Molds

Hey, I thought school was out for the holidays

Thanks, Rick -- those tests are very helpful.

I didn't have two B-6s to bang together, so I immersed mine in hot water instead. It does smell funny! But it doesn't sound so good anymore.

Next up -- I'm going to put "Scrubbing Bubbles" on my fingertips after rubbing the guitar. I'm guessing they will turn yellow. Then I'll stick a hot needle in my fingertip ...

Hey, do I detect sarcasm ?

I thought it was a cooler reply to Jeff's question than ... Embalming Fluid.

Organic chemistry is a "stinky subject" ...

Seriously Jeff, that is a pretty standard Organic Chemistry lab ... usually done in the second semester after aromatic hydrocarbons (phenol, benzene, toluene, etc) and aldehydes have been discussed.

It is an excellent introduction to Polymer Chemistry and the mechanisms associated with polycondensation reactions.

Couldn't leave well enough alone, could ya Russ ...

Awww, Rick ... I just couldn't pass up the opportunity! I asked myself "WWHRD?" ("What Would Howard R. Do?") and started typing.

So keep sharing the science, Rick -- it's one of the great things about this forum.

There were some Rickenbacher built steels for Bronson that were brown bakelite.
Elderly had one for sale a few years ago for $800 as I remember. It had a cover over the head stoc like some of the Ricks have.
Never saw one in person.

Rubbing the back of one of my B6s brought back bad memories. If I never smell Formalin (formaldehyde gas dissolved in methanol and water) again ... it'll be too soon !!

Too many years with all those bio teachers down the hall disecting anything that moved ... and that nasty "Gross Anatomy" my wife took in Med School. That smell permeated everything ...

Rick sounds like herself treated you quite well this X-mas.
Yep, she must be an angel.
Oh excuse me, Dr. Angel!

And you really did need a double neck too in Rick's Museum Of Lapsteel!!

A while ago I posted photos of one of my lap steels which I now know is a brown Bronson Model 52, courtesy of the many informed SGF observers. Here's link and go to photos and see for yourself.
