Back in 1970, a guitarist from Nashville came out to California to work, and he blew a whole lot of minds out in the LA area. His name is Danny Holder.
This cat could play standard guitar so close to sounding like Curly Chalker on steel that if you were in another room, you'd think there was a monster steel player onstage.
He played a Barney Kessel Model Gibson archtop guitar, with 6 Keith-style guitar tuning machines, a Bigsby tremolo unit, and a Sho-Bud volume pedal. He used two plastic fingerpicks and a thumbpick. He played the correct inversions, didn't do any lame (IMHO) string-bender licks, and... well, he simply played so close to Chalker style that everyone in LA was blown away.
The last time I saw him, we were hanging out in Red Rhodes' shop on Cahuenga Blvd. and he was saying he was fixing to move to San Diego.
He was a monster. Whatever happened to Danny? Inquiring minds want to know.

Herb, I heard that guy on a television show a few years back, and I had never heard before nor since, anyone play those almost identical Chalker C6 steel chops on a standard guitar. I seem to remember that it was one of those television gospel shows. It was unbelievable!
Unfortunately, I have never heard him, or of him, since.
