I've watched the CMAs since the mid-seventies. I don't remember a pedal steel player ever receiving the "Musician of the Year Award", am I correct?
Nothing against any of the previous winners but I'd sure like to see a steel player receive it; specifically I think Buddy Emmons deserves recognition beyond what he has received in the circle of steel players.
Maybe I am a little biased but I think Buddy has contributed greatly not only to the design of the instrument but the great things he has put on numerous country music recordings over the years.[This message was edited by Garry Pugh on 10 November 2004 at 07:57 PM.] |

It's fairly typical of the industry to give out ONE award for musician.
Pitiful. |

The way they gave that award to Charlie McCoy year after year, you'd think all the records from Nashville were full of harmonica instead of steel guitar! What's up with that?? |

So who are some of past recipients? I seem to remember Mark O'Connor getting a few. You would think Frankie would have gotten one by now. |

If I am not mistaken, Paul Franklin has been chosen musician of the year at least once or twice.

Anyone who knows Charlie McCoy or anything about the thousands of sessions he's played on knows that the harmonica constitutes maybe one fourth of what he can and usually does contribute to that session...bass, piano, vibes, acoustic guitar, trumpet, sax, etc...I think that's what the award is and should be all about . |

Russ
I might add that you carry yourself
pretty well on guitar and horns too.
Sounds like I'm jealous?

How about an award for Bean Counter of the year. Maybe the award could be a miniature "Jolly Green Giant" |

Hey Russ. Thanks for that info; I obviously didn't know all that. That's why they call me an "industry outsider"! |

Charlie McCoy won it twice-'72 and '73...Chet won it eleven times...Mark O'Connor won several years in a row(early'90's)and Johnny Gimble won it 5 times...Chet,Mark and Johnny have won it more times than anyone else(I think)... |
