I got all 5 Hee Haw DVDs from Time Life last week

Time Life Hee Haw DVDs

Here is what I saw:

Jerry Brightman: A lot of exposure with the Buckaroos

Ralph Mooney: with Waylon early 70s, boy was he young. I almost didn't recognize him until I saw him playing pedals with 2 feet!!

Curly Chalker: not as much as I expected.

J. D. Maness: with the Buckaroos, I didn't remember that.

Cound not identify the steeler with Charley Pride. The lighting was too dark. Sounded like Jimmy Day somewhat.

It also had a lot of Don Rich with his sparkle Teles. There were 2 apperances from Haggard, got to see my man Roy Nichols.

I admit I was young when Hee Haw first came out. I didn't realize at the the time it was all lip sync'd.

Hi Richard,
I guess I shouldn't have said ALL was lip sync'd. The appearance of Waylon looked live.

I have episode #3, which was in 1969. Faron sang "She Went a Little Bit Farther", and "Wine Me Up". It was Doyle Holly on bass, Don Rich on fiddle, 2 unidentified fiddles rounding out the threesome, and I caould not identify the steel player or drummer. No guitarist, however an acoustic rhythm was in the mix.

Boy, Faron had a great voice and knew how to use it.

When did you work with Faron?

Thanks for the reply Richard. It must have been great to work with a singer like that.

I'm thinking more of the later shows were not lip sync'd. I remember seeing the Twitty Birds and Paycheck, and it really looked like the real thing. It's those artists standing in front of the house and in the living room that were probably mostly lip sync'd. Those early band scenes with the Buckaroos are are very faked. I love them anyway.

Thanks for your insight.

The steel player with Charlie Pride was Gene O'neal. The steel player with Faron Young was Doug Jernigan.
Smiley, Russ was already on Hee Haw as part of the band when Chalker was there. Remeber the Charlie McCoy conection?

We played on a show with Faron way back in that time period at Clinton,Iowa - Just wondering if you was with Faron at that time? This might have been in the Late 60's.

The first time I saw Hee Haw on TV, I was stationed at Korat RTAFB Thailand.
I was there in 68-69 and dont remember which year it came on TV.
We got it on the armed forces network. After a few shows, you had to get to the TV room early to see the show, everyone enjoyed it so much.

I think they were taped at the
new Opry Land Hotel.
Someone will correct me if I'm
wrong.

I did several shows with different artists and it was always live. At that point (mid 80's to early 90's) they were taped in one of the studios at the Opry House, essentially backstage at the Opry. The same studios were used for countless TNN productions as well...

Rick, I had the pleasure to get to go to a taping of one of Hee Haw's shows back in the early 80's and it was shot in Nashville on Opryland but don't remember which building. It was in a basement sorta.

The first HEE-HAW season was taped at the Ryman Auditorium. Jay Dee was the steel player. They used the Buckaroos the first season as the "house" band. Story goes that the cast used to go to Tootsie's across the alley to hang out during and/or after the tapings.

I would have loved to been there to be around that!!

Mike Sweeney,
I think you are right about Doug Jernigan. I didn't recognize him until I looked it over. He had his head down until the last of the song (see frame grab below). He also has his ring and little finger shapes throughout the song like Doug plays, so it must me him. He was also playing chimes with his ring finger sticking out to a point, not folded underneath, which I believe is another Jernigan attribute for single note chimes.

I appreciate all your posts.

I wish Doug could see this. Maybe I'll send him a link to this.

Oh by the way, don't ask me to post frame grabs of the Hee Haw girls. I'd probably have time for nothing else.

"...hey Terry, how about a frame of Lisa Todd laying out out the porch?"

"... oh Terry I'd give anything to see that gal in that nurse outfit one more time.."
