Tommy got to play in the spotlight with the Mavericks who tore the show up last night. That Fessy looked and sounded great as Tommy ripped off a great ride.Tommy makes everything look effortless.Jerry Fessenden makes great guitars.

I sure do miss getting to see Tommy White on TV. He is such a tremendous talent and intelligent musician. He does make it all look effortless and he sounds so incredible.
I wish one of the big 4 networks would put the GOO back on regular programming. I do listen on WSM when I can, but don't always get good reception.[This message was edited by Jerry Overstreet on 03 October 2004 at 10:19 AM.] |

Tommy, the monster of the era, no doubt.
He plays better that he knows he does.
His shadow plays better than most.
A good friend, humorous, intelligent, and with a 150 pound soul.

If you looked close in the wings, Jerry was there, too (among other things, he was in town delivering another new guitar to Tommy). Tommy made him proud last night. |

It is just too bad that we can't see the Opry anymore.
I know there have been complaints about it, but it used to be good to see Tommy rip it up on Carter, MSA Millenium, Fessendon, Sho-Bud or whatever. He sounded great on them all........al

Mr. White was awsome on the opry saturday night. I have a question though.....right behind him I thought I saw a fender amp..???..
Is the fender there for other performer's use, or does Tommy use it? |

I can't understand why the GOO is not shown in full. What is the purpose of a country TV channel when it plays video's most of the time. Probably the same mentality that is killing country music today. |

Hey Stephen, I think I saw that Fender you were talking about, but I think I noticed it when that Katrina Elam, if that how you spell it, was doing some yodeling. She sure is a looker. And a nice voice. I thought I saw the guitar hooked up to the Fender, but i am probably wrong. It looked like a Super Reverb if I am not mistaken. Tommy's tone was awesome. It is crazy how ridiculously easy he makes playing the steel look. You are great Tommy!

I saw the Opry the other night too. Tommy's playing was really good. I specifically tuned in to see who was playing steel that night. I enjoyed seeing the Mavericks again. I'm a fan and I'm glad to know that they have a new CD out, recorded live in Austin. My comment regarding country music not being what everyone wants it to be these days (with some exception of course), I have started listening more to the Austin Tex/Mex/Swing country sounds. There's some awesome stuff coming out of Texas these days. Lots of good guitar (Telecasters played cleanly) and PSG music, fiddle, etc. Don't get me wrong, there are lots of great bands and musicians in Nashville, but the record companies are going to cater to those who are buying the records. It's always been that way. Let's just hold onto the good and realize that the "bad" will pass with time (grin)! Them's just my two cents worth...your experience may be different. The answer is...to make money! I would imagine that they get a lot more money for airing those videos than they get from sponsors of the Opry show. Face it, videos are a 4 minute soap opera/commercial. They exist to put sex appeal, fun, love, and drama into a song...the actual music is almost secondary. Producers are now spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to produce a country-song video (and the rock videos cost far more). The sole purpose of the video is to sell CDs. Now, when a video costs over $100,000 to make, it must be shown over and over so it can boost sales enough to cover the cost of both making the video, and airing it as well. So you might see the same video a dozen times in a day.
It's there to maintain a satisfactory profit for all that are involved, nothing more. So, in a manner of speaking, those videos most of us here aren't too crazy about help maintain the jobs of Tommy, and everyone else involved with the Opry. |

Donny you might be correct. However I wonder how Lefty Frizell, Merl Haggard,Hank Williams, Ray Price, Carl Smith, Webb Pierce, etc,etc made million selling records without videos. Country music was country back then and the records sold themselves because they were good. How many of todays artist's have hits that come close with video's. Watching someone lip sync with a bunch of old cars and lots of gals does not make me buy their CD. However I recently saw the Cherry Bombs on the GOO and went to WalMart the next day and bought their CD. Just my opinon |
