Maybe this is already well-known, but it was new to me and someone might find it useful:

I just bought a series of music DVDs from a UK firm called Prizm Leisure called 25 Country Classics, 25 More Country Classics, 25 Country Number 1s and 25 More Country Number 1s (I believe amazon.com sells them in the US).

The good news first: There are some nice performances among those 100, quite a few of them featuring Buddy Emmons on steel (playing his black & red MCI). You'll find him backing Darrell McCall, Johnny Russell, Freddy Weller and a number of others. There are also good cuts by, to name a few, Gene Watson, Patsy Cline, Tanya Tucker, Tammy Wynette and Johnny Cash as well.

Now the bad news: These classics are rarely performed by the artists that made them classics. Nearly all the cuts are low video quality live shows from somewhere in Florida. They seem to originate from the early-to-mid-eighties, judging from the horrific hairstyles and clothes. They try very hard NOT to show the steel players, but they don't always succeed.

All in all, IMO the four DVDs are well worth their moderate asking price. But be prepared to hear and see some of your favorite singers performing way below their usual abilities, and avoid a few tracks if you are sensitive to sour notes. In a few cases bad singing, gaudy costumes and really silly hairstyles make for really good laughs. I won't mention any names, but one of them begins with a Wag and ends with an oner

I believe those are from a TNN show called "Church Street Station", taped in Orlando in the 80's. Buddy was in the house band that backed up some of the artists, others used their own bands. I played on it a few times, with Vince Gill and Eddie Rabbitt (are either of them in the ones you bought?)

I'm willing to bet that none of the musicians are getting paid for these DVD releases!

Yeah, Church street station was the place. And judging from the quality of production (no info about any musicians, and sometimes even the wrong names on screen), I guess you're right about the non-payment. No Gill and no Rabbitt though.

Per,

There has been a series of videos from Church Street Station out around 1990 - I think the DVDs come from that series but it looks like there are artists on the DVDs that were not included on the original videos (Darrell McCall for example).

Buddy Emmons is backing up Faron Young, Johnny Russell, Jimmy Dean and others, but there are also other great players showing: Tiny Olson with Gene Watson, Terry Crisp with Connie Smith and some other good players I didn't recognize.

Kind Regards, Walter
