Thanks John. Very intelligent and informative stuff from all 3. I like what Susan said about each of her PSG 'mentors.'

Dear John,

Thanks for posting that, one of the coolest articles I've ever read about the steel I think. Full of great insights, I especially enjoyed Chas's citation of the great Jerry Byrd: "I've spent my life trying to play as few notes as possible" (paraphrased). A lot of wisdom in those three articles.

Kaphan's use of a "scaffold" track for his album makes a lot of sense, a lack of a real reference pitch (other than the one in my head) makes it harder to write, sounds like a great way to go about it. Thank you again for posting that link for us.

Gerald

I posted something about Susan Alcorn's recent concert in Nashville and got no responses... Did anyone else here see any of her recent shows? (mostly in the Northeast I think). I was very impressed, I'm curious to hear what other "forumites" think....

And that was an exceptional article in my opinion; three articulate players, each with their own approach and point of view...

I saw Susan Alcorn in NYC recently; it's a rare pleasure getting to see people playing in a truly individual and distinctive way.

It was also a fascinating thing to see a room full of folks who had possibly never seen or heard steel in person sit absolutely still and absorb it... it was folks who had mainly come to hear a DJ spinning that night. It made me wonder whether they had any idea how far out and unusual the stuff they were hearing actually was. Extended techniques on both hands, slants for microtonal effects, just a lot of food for thought and reflection.
