Topic: When Will Julian and Reece Be Inducted? |

Ok, guys having not been a follower in the past of the legendary greats of Steel Guitar, I come to the table with what I hope is a open mind not shadowed by any ideas of what is considered standard and what isn't regarding playing the steel.
While in St. Louis I noticed there were 2 Inductee Placks missing!
Julian Tharp and Reese Anderson. Now I'm somewhat aware of the process from reading other threads how to submit the request.
I don't imagine there was much to do over Buddy Emmons when he was inducted, come one in.
Why do I bring this up, time and again all I heard all weekend from all kind of players was what a shame it was for these 2 great players not being recognized for there talent.
I enjoyed the show tremendously and all the guys and "The Lady, Sara" were great but not one of the players with an exception to Joe and Tom played anything like these guys.
Hey, Lets do what is right, let's get them in where they rightfully deserve.
Why is it tha Zane wasn't inducted until later, He was an awesome player, just listen to the Tribute to Zane Beck!

Also L.T. Zinn. Two of the the three who were inducted this year went to L.T. and thanked him for being the person that was their mentor and hero in the early years of their careers. L.T. was the first steel player to be broadcast nationwide on radio with the 101 Ranch Boys.

| Dan, I wish there were more players put in every year but the system is not set up like that. I believe this board does a great job of selecting and voting on those who do get voted in. I know these two men are considered great players and will get their due in time. There is always next year as the old saying goes so I guess we will see. |

Awards are great, and these guys truly do deserve the recognition... but being great players and giving the world the incredible music that these guys have given- the high level of musicianship that they have set-and their strong influence- exists regardless of whether they get "the plaque" or not.
Some of these giants teach steel, some are known primarily as performers, but all have contributed greatly to "furthering the steel guitar". There is no denying their stature in my mind and in the minds of the many players who have enjoyed their music and been inspired by them.

Hey Doug:
You are right on with L.T Zinn.I was 15 yrs old ,playing on radio station WELL in Battle Creek Michigan every Saturday.As soon as we were done we ran home to catch L.T & the boys.I never did learn to play "Cimmeron roll on" as good as he did.
They were a inspiration to all of us .
I will be in Michigan for the Steel Jam at Trufant on the 10 of October.I hope he shows up.

Reminiscing with L.T., we both remembered the bouncers at the old Trianon Ballroom in Oklahoma City about 40 years ago, throwing miscreants down that long staircase to the street!

Old Bud-I will be looking forward to seeing you and I hope, Lt.Zinn in Trufant on October 10.
Leonard has surely paid his dues and is a living legend himself.
As for Julian and Reece, absolutely no doubt. They are already Hall of Famers
in our hearts.
Just in their playing alone, Reece and Julian have advanced the Pedal Steel Guitar to new heights never before attained!
So ,they should be recognized as well as have been the other past greats in the HOF....al

Musicianship aside, Reece Anderson should be inducted on the basis of his involvement with the MSA guitars, after all...Eddie Alkire's in there! Bobbe Seymour should also be in there on the basis of all the recording he's done on hit records, and on the basis of his million seller album.
I believe these two gentlemen really should be inducted, together, next year. I'm hoping it happens, as I can think of no two living players who deserve it more. |

The fact that they are NOT in there taints the entire process, the people who fabricated this "Hall of Fame", and the prestige and honor that it is supposed to represent.
I have not read the charter of whoever it is that "owns" this "Hall of Fame", so I am not able to comment on what the criteria is for a person to be inducted into it. Maybe there is a "persnickity" clause that allows the person who owns the ball to take it and go home whenever he wants to and only let the people that HE wants to be in the game.
Anybody able to fill us in on who came up with this HOF and what the rules are for induction AND what the REAL reasons for this apparent injustice.

Just to clarify my remarks above. I mean to draw absolutely no parallel between Pete Rose's guilt, innocence and legal standing and Reece's situation. The parallel I'm making is that both have many supportive fans and unwilling or unsupportive powers that be standing between them and their place in their respective HoF.

I'd say Robt has a chance as long as he doesn't start suing fellow steel players that don't like the way he does business or make fun of his guitars..
I don't think anybody in their right mind would however, so I think he's got a shot at it.
My money's on Pete, though I didn't know Mr Rose even played..
Go figure..

Everytime I have viewed these posts over the past few years, they always touch my heart! Because I know that these two Great Steel Players so deserve this honor.
Julian left us 10 years ago this coming November. Reece is still alive! Why is it so difficult to give these two what they undoubtedly deserve?
I knew both these players well! Julian and Reece's Great Steel Artistry are imprinted in my mind and heart forever!
More importantly for me, they were my friends, just like I know they were many of you guys friends too!
Thanks for remembering their genius and their GOD given talents! In time they will be included in the SGHOF, or less it not be a true Steel Guitar Hall of Fame!

There's an old saying that goes...
"You can't continually throw dirt on someone else without getting a little on yourself."
Hopefully, we'll all (steelers great and small) get over what happened over 20 years ago.
'Course, there's always a few who will hold a grudge forever. As for myself, life's too short for that kinda stuff. I have better things to do with my time, especially not knowing how much I have left.

| Another most deserving candidate, I believe, should be the late Tommy Roots. Remember all the training videos and teaching tablature that he produced? I also heard that his training aids pre-dated many. I don't know if any of his cassettes are still available, but I think his playing was fantastic. I never grow tired of listening to his music. I never knew Tommy personally, but maybe some of his acquaintances could fill us in on any of his contributions to the psg. I understand that he retired from the Texas school system as a teacher. Seems to me that being such a productive pioneer should lend some weight. |

This thread began as a bit of a lobbying effort for a couple of great steel guitar players. Fair enough! But now we're wanting to kick a few "underserving" members out of The Hall, criticize the current management committee and location, and rewrite the membership evaluation requirements.
Let no good deed go unpunished!
I give Scotty and the committee a lot of credit for founding and growing the HoF. We should all be as motivated.
If you have ideas on making it better then why not contact Scotty and get involved?

Sometimes big is not the answer. When all is said and done all that attend the ISGC know the meaning of the effort ,the selecting and finally the chosen who are put up on the wall. It is enough that for four days one can reflect on and admire and support those inducted. The Convention is unique,off of it many other steel shows have been born. The great players themselves are in demand and they have extended themselves and careers by creating their recordings that we rush to buy. To me that is the blood and life of the Steel Guitar. No matter where the plaques are hung It is the four days in September,the four days that bring, from all over the world,the reason for it all. Plus getting to see the latest Smiley Roberts wardrobe.
