It is not that I didn't REALLY like my Carter, my Webb, the Mesa Boogie, the Alembic, the Boss SE70, the JBLs, the EVM-15Ls, the Delson, the TTPP pickups, they all worked and sounded great.

But "what if" there was something else that tickled my funny bone just a little more "today". It is about the process not the result, the fishing not the number of fish caught, the trip planning not the trip, the courtship not the wedding.

Guess that is how I am wired, but it is fun to try new things.

Brad hurry up with the BB I need a fix.

I thought I was the only one with this terrible affliction. After years of going to gearheads anonymous meetings I think I may be on the road to recovery.
the only difference, my addiction was with old electric guitars and old amps, stomp boxes....etc. I couldn't go by a pawn shop or a garage sale without stopping. I even stopped people on the streets of small towns here in Texas and Oklahoma and would ask people"Hey you don't know anyone with any old guitars they may want to sell do you?" You would be surprised at how many things I found using that technique!

Dang, I gotta quit talking about this, my hands are getting sweaty!

Hi Larry...if anyone is a "gear head" it is you!. I was surprised you stayed with that SE70 for so long. I think that could be a record.
See ya buddy!

This thread parallels thoughts I've been having lately about my golf game. I've bought all kinds of new and improved clubs that are suppose to cure all kinds of swing flaws. I've got a closet full of gear. The problem is, I still have the same bad swing. No club can really cure a bad swing. Although I've tried to find it!

I may be turning into a gear head about music also. I owned one guitar for 24 years. I didn't want anything else. I just concentrated of what I was trying to play, and my technique. Now I own 4 and the only time I play anymore is at the steel shows. What's the solution? I think I need a bigger house.

Randy. Check out www.swingmachinegolf.com/
For the price of a lob wedge it has changed my swing forever and way for the better.

Can't help with the gearhead problem, got one of my own. Now it comes in two versions. One to carry to the gig and one to carry on the course.

I think it's the thrill of the hunt. I have had a bakelite rick (1940's), two Fender Stringmaster single necks, two double neck Stringmasters and a triple neck Stringmaster. I only have left a JB Frypan you played a few weeks ago. Oh, I also had a National New Yorker 7 string that sounded pretty good. My palms are sweating again for the chase!

I'm in!
Larry, I just traded that Boss AC-2 (Acoustic simulator) for a Boss MT-2 (Distortion pedal).
The AC-2 wasn't seeing much action, the MT-2 was on the gig last night.
I also recently broke out my old Roland GP-8 for a pop country gig that needed some non-traditional steel playing (you could truthfully say that "the steel replaced 2 keyboard players!").
I've gone through a few amp swaps this year, and have a '66 Bandmaster (ala Ken Fox) coming into my possession this weekend (bye-bye to the ol' Les Paul that I haven't played in a few years [good thing I got that Strat!]).
I recently added a Sho-Bud S10U 7x5, and a Fender 400 S8 4x0 to the list of gigging instruments. Used the Sho-Bud yesterday, and will use the Fender tomorrow night for a Honky Tonk country gig.
My wife’s newest catch phrase (accompanied with a distraught facial/vocal expression) is... "you got another package in the mail" (I'm thinking... "I'm busted!").

[In the immortal stammer of Capt. James T. Kirk]... Must... Buy... [Clutching fists]Sell... [Falls to knees] Trade! [Closes eyes shut tight in a pained grimace directed towards the heavens].

Now that's livin'!

they don't make all them sparkly lures and fancy reels to catch fish... they make 'em to catch ANGLERS!

Gearheads Anonymous is closely related to

Musicians Anonymous (tm)
Which is a 12 half-step program (c)2004 David Van Allen

I admit I am powerless over musical equipment... my rehearsal space has become unmanageable.

Bass fishermen???

I abide by the asumption that the fish have seen all of last years lures. So I have to buy new ones ever year, or every week. I could keep Wal-Mart stocked up.

Guess I've gotta chime in. I got a Pod xt this year after running "straight" for a quarter century, and shortly thereafter I found myself getting a Nashville 112, a Hilton VP, respeakering my 500 with a K130, and sending my Professional in to Duane Marrs. Somewhere I found a way to make thumbpicks that actually fit me. That one I should have done 20 years ago.

Total? 3 or more grand...

Can't say I've never been able to find "the sound", but I'm finding new tube amp models with the xt like the Tweed Bassman that I really like.

I think though, I enjoy the results more than the process.

I'd rather spend money on my panhead.

ROTFL
What the steel isn't microtonal?

I have had a Fishman on a Bass, but otherwise not been much of a bass fisherman.
Bluefish off Cape Cod a bit. An occasional Scup.
And once a swordfish, with a hand spear from the bow pulpit off Nantucket.

Now a TRUE Gearhead is hitting on the manufacturers to build what they want.

I can point to at least one great tube preamp to digital box,
I was told that I planted the seed for.
No one had done it before, but I buttonholed people at AES coinventions.
Eventually they did get one out.
Now there are many.

More recently I have had some sugestions for the BB for future iterations also.

Now here's a subject that is near and dear to my heart. I am on the precipice of opening a steel guitar store here in North County San Diego (primarily to ease my wife's concern about the fact that we can't walk in the living room anymore due to all the gear under, around, and on top of the pool table). After spending 30 years in veterinary medicine (which I loved) but being forced to produce too much money on a daily basis in order to make payroll, etc. and all of the other associated daily business headaches, I told my friend Kevin Ryan that I wanted to open a business that I didn't have to make any money with and he said that my choice of a steel guitar store was a perfect one .
I also bought a "Swing Motion Trainer" (a computerized golf swing analysis machine) a few years back after seeing it highlighted on one of the "Next Step" segments on the Discover channel on TV and 3 cover articles in Golf Magazine(12/96-2/97)in the hopes of becoming the next great golf guru. Needless to say, it now sits in the garage in flight cases for my next life .

Talk about being a "Gearhead", check out my home page at the bottom. This CD cover actually was Bruce Zumsteg's idea.

Tim, I think the lesson to be learned from the pictures on that web link are that we need more knobs... Just a couple more anyway, what more to screw up a perfectly good pickup output
