So today we have our usual pre labor day farm party we play every year. Big difference today is-our lead guitarist has a family thing and can't be there, so it's just me on fills and solos, with the exception of some that our band leader plays. 3 sets of nuthin' but steel fills. Hope I don't run out of licks in 10 minutes!
Don't know if I should be dancing in the street or hiding under the bed....
I guess whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger!

I've never been in a band that would play a gig if one of it's members was missing. I don't believe that its professional to show up without the full band. Thats what they are paying for. |

Hi Kevin!
Normally that would be our policy as well. but it's hardly a pro gig-it's a family pig roast, they're in love with our band leader and would have him stand up there by himself if no one else could come. We're playing for food, beer and whatever winds up in the hat at the end of the night.
If it was a real gig, with a flat fee, we'd have gotten someone to sit in, or passed.
And it's 4 piece-me, rhythym guitar, bass and drums.

JB, Those gigs are fun. Just mix it up a bit more than usual. Spend some time playing nothing but low strings or even do a verse on open strings only. With no guitar player to clash with you can try out different passing or substitution chords. My gigs this weekend ended up being in 2 different bands each with no lead guitar player or drums. I guess its not up to Kevin's high professional standards but I was a steel guitar hero to about a dozen drunk guys down at Sunny's bar in Red Hook, Brooklyn last night !

I have been playing a "singles" act now for about 7 monthns every thursday. I often wear a coat and tie, there is no smoking. If you want to get your chops up, enlarge you song list and play whatever YOU think is appropriate. Try that for a while. You'll really get spoiled. Sorry I didn't do it 20 years ago! P.S. At first it is quite a challange. [This message was edited by W Franco on 28 August 2004 at 11:43 AM.] |

JB,
I think you'll find, that, your approach and feel for the tunes will be different. You'll be forced to be more creative with your fills and solo's. It's almost like a paid rehearsal. By that, I mean you can experiment more with phrasing. I've done that type of gig for years, and I've always come away with more tricks in my bag, then when I started. Even if you tend to repeat yourself at the end of the gig, no one else really knows it but you. So, have fun and enjoy yourself. It's time to be creative! |

sounds like a fun.I`m playing tomorrow down town Nashville with accoustic guitar player and mandolin player, now that is going to be interesting.Less drums and screaming guitars more music if you ask me.I love those gigs.Only problem is when you luse a string, that may be complicated since you can`t stop playing and you better know what you gonna do.(bad boys bad boys... )
