I have been playing steel in our Christian Church every Sunday for over a year. Usually there is an organ player and guitar player and myself. Here is my mission. I am attempting to get musicians together to play on Sundays and We will need equipment. For example a set of electronic drums, better PA etc. I have been researching grants etc to fund this mission and have not had a great deal of success as of yet. Have any of you undertaken this task? If so, how did you go about it? I know that if it is meant to be, it will happen by the grace of God. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Kirk

Here's a proven strategy.

Step 1) The church should support a missions program. That could include a community service of some sort (where actual church money and member's time is spent in the community) or send money (a generous amount) to at least 3 to 6 missionaries in other areas of the world.

Step 2) The Pastor should preach from the bible (not medling or hearsay) at least once a month on giving and tithes.

Step 3) Within 6 months from step one, spend the church’s money (from it's own bank account) on good (not cheap) equipment. The church should buy all the equipment needed (not necessarily the same as what is used) for all musicians.

Kirk, I know nothing about your church and the intent is not to incenuate any shortcomings. My point actually applies to the giver’s view. It is just that many people are more willing to give to an organization where they can see the benefits of the moneys already given. It is discouraging for most to sow without a visual crop.

As a pastor, I have witnessed a congregation that was very weak in the area of giving come to life and excited about contributing money, materials and time once they could see the results of it.

This is not to belittle the asking of help. However, we must remember God is the source for His work.

Hope this didn’t sound like preaching. It is just hard for me to not share these little bits of experience I have gone through myself.

God bless,

That is quite evident at our small Episcopal church. Through a capital campaign, we were able to raise enough money to build a new parish hall and ended up with a mortgage to pay off. The more we used the hall, the more the parishoners donated toward the debt. We recently paid off the note and are now sprucing up the exterior of our church with new lighting, parking lot, signs, etc. and we are completely remodeling the interior with new carpeting, paint, bench cushions, sound system, lighting, and a computer driven projection system. Everybody is excited about the work and it is all paid for. Our parish members are really enjoying the use of the new parish hall; therefore we have more activities during the week, which attracts more visitors, who end up joining the church and donating their time, effort and money. The circle just goes round and round. I play guitar at our contemporary services and am looking forward to using the new sound system this Sunday.

Great posts. I also play in our praise and worship band at church. I occassionally play my steel but mostly play bass since we do not have another depedable bass player. We are considering forming a small group from our P/W band to do outreach type gigs in other churches and small concerts. We have a lead vocalist that is as good as anyone on the radio. She can do country, contemporary and anything in between. She is too good to keep to ourselves and her devotion to the Lord is unwavering. God Bless, Ken

Thanks for all of the replies on this. I have found that passive Chritianity is not the way to go. In other words, "God will do it all". I believe that we are directed to go for it and do what we feel that God is telling us to do. That also means, research and asking for help from others. I love playing this music and it fills my heart, fills the void, that everyday life does not complete. If I can give of my talents, (that are limited) to help minister to others, I feel that I am using the gifts that God gave to me. Thanks for the advise and your prayers. Kirk

Some of the best blessings you will ever receive, is playing at nursing homes. Besides that, once they lock the wheels on those wheel chairs, you have a captive audience. They can't get away!

That's exactly how I feel about it Kirk. God gave me my talents, I should use them for him. we have a nice little band in our church. a piano, an electric rythem guitar, a bass, an accordian, and I play steel and my acoustic/ electric. we need a PA system in a bad way though. good luck in your quest, and God bless.

Hi Kirk!

You hit the nail on the head when you talked about God providing, for that's exactly how our Country-Gospel group Harbor Lighthouse can go out with many $ worth of gear, 50 - 60 times a summer, all over the midwest. HE will direct your ways on this, and open or close doors that you might've thought otherwise. Wish you the best, and see you soon.

Hi Mark! Good to hear from you again. I have thought about you quite a bit lately. I wish we lived closer to each other. We, at the church board meetings and Pastoral care committee, have been talking about beefing up our PA system and getting more equipment for anticipated musicians etc. The very next Sunday, our existing PA system in the church quit qorking as a result of lightning strike the previous Tuesday evening. Hmmmm, I wonder if HE is trying to tell us something? I have made the committment to "turn the corner" and dedicate my limited talents to the Lord. Music touches so many hearts and souls, including mine. I feel great when I am on the right path, but when I veer away, that's when I notice life gets tough. We will make this work if HE allows it to work, and, if I do what I am being told. God bless all of you.
