The results on the voting for "the Greatest Living Pedal Steel Guitar Player" are in
they can be consulted here: http://www.nighttimes.com/nt_main.asp?page=editorial
Considering the 4000 that are registered on this Forum, Ken Kase got about 130 votes from the Steel Guitar Community which i find to be rather low, but what you see is what you get[This message was edited by CrowBear Schmitt on 22 August 2004 at 11:53 PM.] |

I am shocked that out of 4000 registered here on the forum that only 130 voted. There may not be as many that look at the forum as I thought there were. I did vote and for Buddy Emmons, who came out in the number one slot. On that I am not surprised. |

Want to know why there were not many votes?
There is no #1. There are #1s at doing their thing which no one else can do better.
Ask any steeler who was voted #1 "who is the greatest?" and they will name someone other than themselves.
I could fill this page with #1s in my book. All great people and steel players. If I went on record endorsing someone as the best, I would be slighting a lot of great artists in their own right.
Thats my story and I'm stickin' to it.........JD

Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter. |
This may have something to do with how many voted. I wonder how many forum members felt this statement would somehow be included in the poll results.
A more interesting observation is that not one vote was cast for Robert Randolph. Could it be that the extreme comments of so many in the original posts did not accurately express the depth of emotions stirred but rather were exaggerated babble exspending the opportunity to waste a little extra time at the keyboard before heading off to bed for the night?
When all is said and done, I bet we will find that most of us like pretty much everybody and pretty much anything to do with music. Let's face it, just because we don't spend time with it doesn't mean we hate it. I also expect that deep down inside, we are all just another bunch of good fellers with picks on our fingers.

All those votings and competitions are absolutely worthless. How can somebody who has obviously no clue what a steel guitar is start this? The final list speaks for itself: Two of our legends who have already passed away (Jimmy Day and Jeff Newman) are included, some ridiculous spelling mistakes made me laugh (or cry) - Jeff NEUMAN and Larry SASSAR...
Listen to your favorite #1, listen to all the other players (they are all great in their own respect!) and forget about lists like those!
Kind Regards, Walter

It seems that many Forum members were "unclear on the concept". The question wasn't well stated, and you had to actually read the article to understand how to "vote". Many Forum members were so preoccupied with the list of choices that they refused to participate.
I'd like to thank Ken for giving us the opportunity to respond, for posting the results, and for providing a link to the Forum for his readers. Thanks, Ken!

I didn't vote because,
"Music is an art, not a competition.".
Same reason I refuse "Battle of the Bands" type gigs. |

A) most of the above
B) this writer who makes his living writing and has no reason to care about steel guitar gets positively reamed--and apparently in some emails so uncivil that I'm embarrassed to be associated with whoever sent them--for stating some grossly uninformed 'facts' about steel guitar. So this guy gives the floor over to the steel guitar community to set matters straight as to expert facts and expert opinions and what does he get from this informed sector? Votes for dead men for greatest living steel guitarist. Heroes whose names can't even be spelled right. Even a name that couldn't be read correctly off of the front of a guitar. Wonderful players who I admire and respect and love to listen to but who it is ludicrous to include as candidates for "greatest living player". Yeah--we showed him.
But primarily back to A).
Let's all go to People magazine and vote for our favorite Survivor. Or the best beer commercial. It is important! It really matters! And whoever wins the poll, well there it is. The best. Proven. End of all arguments. |

i think that scoffing at Ken Kase and his poll renders a disservice to the Steel Guitar & its community
one never knows who might show up and lend a helping hand
a steel greenhorn reporter just might
so giving us neophytes a poll was'nt a good idea ?
(givin' the general public a chance to vote on the subject would stir up this hornet's nest 4 sho')
i found it to be pertinent since Ken wanted to make up for his Robert Randolph mishap(?)
oh he's not one of "us" ?
Ken that is.
no camaraderie or kudos here
some of the attitudes here make me chuckle cause they remind me of the Blues and Jazz "milieu" in France.
a common attitude here is "only Blacks really know how to play that stuff" so when a White cat is playin'it, they say "naw, that ain't right, he's not Black, he ain't no good - and then i say: " wait a minute you ain't Black and you playin that stuff too !"
c'est si bon to be snob
anyway,
i don't know if Ken is a good or influent journalist - i've never met the gentleman - i believe he lives in St Louis -
i sincerely wish him the best and hope that the steel guitar takes him and his career to new heights.
Thanx Ken, it was fun
Joey, i'll disagree about competition.
Musicians like the rest like to compete.
is'nt a cuttin' contest something that Jazz Musicians came up w: to separate the men from the boys or an occasion to get off on each other and play even better ?
too much pressure huh ?
ps: i loved reading Joe Alterio's thread:
quote: OK....this was probably the biggest mind-blower of all to me, and made my trip to Nashville complete.....ROBERT RANDOLPH comes into the club and stands against the wall just to hear Terry wail on the pedal steel. ROBERT RANDOLPH!!! He even gave Terry his card and told him to give him a call! I, of course, had to walk up to RR and tell him that I, too, was a steel player and let him know that I feel he is an awesome player. I then walked back to my chair to listen to more of Terry, and watch RR take in more of Terry as well.
So....for those of you who think RR lives in some shallow world where Nashville pedal steel doesn't exist in his mind and is of no influence to him....HE WAS ON BROADWAY LAST MONDAY NIGHT LISTENING TO STEEL AT ALL THE CLUBS ON THE STREET!

Well, I can't honestly say anyone is a better steel player than Buddy Emmons. I voted for him. I think he blazed the trail that most of us try to follow in our playing. Their are some others that have done a very good job following though.

I didn't respond to this because I look at votes like this as similar to voting on who is the sexiest woman in the world. Sure I have an opinion, but I really don't care in the least what other people think.

Someone might be a better pedal steel player than Buddy Emmons, but there is none greater. The question was about who is greatest, not who is best, or who is your favorite. That's the point that I thought a lot of people missed. |
