A good many years back I met George Edwards who was touring with Kitty Wells. He was friendly and answered a lot of my steel guitar questions. He was doing a great job on stage too. I'm just wondering if George is still around and still playing guitar...I've never heard him mentioned on the forum. |

I believe George had a stroke not too long ago and not sure if he is picking any now. He is a member and attends most meetings of the North Tennessee Steel Guitar Association. Don Helms takes him for therapy. I am sure Smiley or John Drury or Billy Robinson can give you more information than I can. I am only a lowly member.

Thanks Gere. I'm sorry to hear that George Edwards has been in poor health. When I met him there was a local summer festival going on and I was a bit tipsy...which I did my best to hide. George was very gracious, explaining various mechanical aspects of his Emmons as he was tearing down and packing up. He struck me as most likely a very temperate man and I was a bit embarassed to be less than sober. He even suggested we might go for a coffee and talk more, but I was with a group and anyways, I felt I wasn't fit company in that state. I regret that we hadn't met under slightly different circumstances...I'd have loved to try his Emmons and get some pointers and insight. If you're out there George, thanks for being such a nice guy and I hope that your health has improved. [This message was edited by Bill Miller on 22 August 2004 at 09:47 AM.] |

Bill,
I run into george once or twice a week and from what I see he doing very well. He started back playing the guitar again not long ago and though he and his Emmons aren't communicating with each other as well as they once did, I think playing again is a step in the right direction for him. He overcame some serious speech problems that the stroke brought on and it wouldn't surprise me any to see him get his chops back with time.
I will tell him that you asked about him.

Thanks John, it's great to hear that George has made progress and is playing his guitar again. I'm sure he wouldn't remember our encounter but I'll bet he remembers that Kitty Wells tour that landed him way out here in eastern Quebec back in the late '80s or very early '90s. He'd have heard an awful lot of french everywhere.
After my previous post I remembered something...we were talking as George was gathering up his equipment after the show and I offered to lend a hand. I carried his steel off the stage and put it on the bus for him that night so long ago and I've never forgotten how heavy that thing was. I guess it was a double neck Emmons push/pull. It must have weighed nearly twice what my Carter does. So I'm glad George is playing but I hope he's not lifting that guitar anymore. |
