In th 1940's there were around 150,000 Steel Players.I have no way of knowing, but I would estimate the number is less than 10,000 today. Any body want to Guess the number now. ??Ed Naylor Steel Guitar Works.

Ed,

A number of years ago, some felt that a mailing list like one's Jeff Newman used or Tom Bradshaw's were pretty good indicators. Later, we felt that Scotty's was too.

If my memory serves me, Jeff's had around 30,000 world wide. I have no idea what Tom Bradshaw had or Scotty's. A call to Fran might help.

I read, at a very important Office in Nashville a few years ago; that the definition of a perfect gentleman was/is someone who can play the Accordian, but; doesn't!

I have it on good authority (saw this number in a dream) that the number is 17,943 and 1/2.

One indication might be how many members the Forum has. Figure about 3/4 of the steelers in USA are members?

I'd be surprised if more than one-quarter of steelers are Forum Members, maybe one-half at the most. There are just lots of musicians that don't do computers. What do you think, b0b?

Whats considered a steel player? For example: We had a quick rehersal at the bass players house and there was a "Carter Starter" sitting in the corner of his basement. I had no idea the bass player was playing steel. He said he pokes around on it but nothing real serious. Whats amazing is, I have been gigging wih this guy for over a year and not one word about his learning to play steel or any interest about any of my equipment/playing etc... How many of these guys are out there???

If it was easy to learn steel everyone would do it. Or if you could get a decent steel for around $250. But since I'm stupid and Broke that leaves me out. HaHa!

30,00 seems about right... sad to say. There REALLY should be more.

One criteria might be how many steels have been sold. Certainly there is some reference in that. They can't all be hidden under beds and not everone owns two.

But if you ask how many C6 players are out there... 10,000 seems optimistic.

There are more than 30,000 accordion players in France alone.
And Gloria Gaynor I Will Survive is still in rotation.
