The older sisters .. the Academys ... are just flat-out fantastic. They have these cute little horseshoe magnets, they are one piece cast bakelite, integrated nut and bridge, strings through the body. They were thinner than the traditional bakelites ... and in my opinion, the best student model steel guitar ever.

Then after two or so years they changed ... names and design. The two Ace's that I saw with the molded handrest did not have horseshoe pickups (or I would have bought them). I really wasn't too impressed with the sound

A few times, when ebay featured one, I'd email the seller and ask if they had horsesshoe magnets under the handrest. I remember two sellers said yes ... couple more said no.

Anyone ever seen a "handrest" Ace with shoes under there ?

I specify "Handrest Aces" cause I do have an Ace with horseshoe magnets ... but it was just the last of the Academys that got a Ace sticker thrown on (I've seen another one like that recently)

Gruhn's Guide describes both the Ace and Academy as having "shoes" ... but it wouldn't be the first time that the book has been wrong (or at least incomplete).

Hmmmm, this one certainly has the standard mounting plate screw array for a horseshoe pickup ...

Al,

I have the exact same guitar. If we can ever get together I will show it to you. It is my favorite electric in my limited collection of daily players.
