I seem to remember something about Hal Ruggs cutting that song with ole Jonesy, but then again I can't remember my own name most of the time. Now where did I put my glasses? Hmmmmmm

I thought Jimmy Day did the original. Later on on a remake there was Pete Drake.
Now Ricky Skaggs did a remake with BE and it was TASTY!!!

Sorry to say I've never heard the version you guys are talking about. But any of you remember Buddy's solo on Duane Eddy's cut of this song. Not bad at all for 1963. |

Yep, I too thought Jimmy Day was on the original cut, but it may have been The Big E. It was classssic regardless! Great song! And George was the best!

P.S.
And Jimmy did do an instrumental version of this song on his L.P. years ago titled "All Those Years." Ever hear that L.P. ?

When I saw Stu Basore answering this question, I was reminded of what I believe is THE best backup work ever done on pedal steel, bar none, by Stu Basore - a Jean Shepard recording of City Lights. I think it must have been one of those "remake for a new label" things, since the album sounds too modern to be sixties originals (and Jean looked a little too old on the cover...). The steel is very prominent, not hidden in the mix like they do today. The sound on that recording is the holy grail of E9th style and tone to me! If you haven't heard it, it's worth looking for!
