Last night I caught about half of the Billy Walker program on RFD TV. Cal Smith was on the program and he sang Deep Water. When the turnaround came up, the camera switched to the steel. He was playing a ZB Custom and he had black hair and a beard that kinda outlined his face. Who was he? Also was that Del Reeves hosting the show? There was a segment on the show where they changed bands and the bass player in Cal Smith's band looked a lot like a young Jeff Newman, is that possible?

Thanks
James

The steel player with Carl Smith on the RFDTV show last night (Del Reeves' Country Carnival) was Jim Murphy. I know, I couldn't believe it either. I knew it sounded like Jim and also before the show started, Johnny saw Murph's ZB Custom sitting in the background when they got a shot of Del's band. I couldn't believe it either..You could sure tell it was Jim by what he was playing. We have a cassette tape with those songs that Carl did and it was definitely Jim Murphy playing steel. The steel player with Del's band with the dark hair and dark glasses playing the Emmons was Larry Sasser, and the bass player with Carl's band was Larry Lee McFadden, Johnny said.

Thanks Joan. During the time when those shows were new, I was working nights 3 -11. I wasn't playing steel then, I new Lloyd and Buddy and that was all. I really like the old shows with the other steel heros of the era. Thanks again for the reply. BTW, tell Johnny hello. See you guys in March if not before at a steel meeting in Mesquite or Tyler
