It was certainly a bitter/sweet evening last night at the Hawaii Theater, after having lost our hero Speedy earlier in the day. But to see Tau resplendent in his black tux and covered in leis, come onto the stage with his National tri cone, helped displace the bad thots. He was joined by his daughter Dorian on ukulele, and the headliner, Makana, on guitar. At the age of 95, and having not seriously touched the guitar in 20 years+, it was touch and go for all involved. But after the first number(Maui Chimes), Tau was rewarded with a standing ovation and deafening applause. The happy look on his face was priceless! Another tune(Hilo March), and his solo portion was over, short, but very sweet. It was amazing the control he manifested in both hands, providing the crowd an experience of what it was like back in a time that no one else present had been alive and privy to. No wonder he was an international star for decades. He returned later to join Bill Tapia(also 95) for another couple of numbers, concluding with a crowd pleasing version of Manuela Boy. It was clear to all, that he was very happy to be back in front of an appreciative audience. In an interview earlier in the week he stated that he "hope(s) to live to one hundred, and is glad to have the chance to play one more time". Here's hoping it's not the last time to have seen this true legend.
