I've been carrying my lap steel to gigs lately, just to play it on a few tunes. I can play the same notes on the pedal steel, but it just doesn't sound the same. I want that lap steel sound once in a while.

How many of you also take two steels to the gig?

I dont play too many gigs these days, maybe two or three a month, but I always bring my lap steel along in case of a mechanical
problem with the steel.Lately I also bring along a dobro just for a change of pace if the bandleader goes along.I know what you meen though, sometimes the lap steel just sounds right and its nice to be able to have it at your disposal.Just another trick in the bag.

Back in the 80's I used to play in a band where I'd bring both my MSA pedal steel and my 3 neck Stringmaster. I's set up at the left of the stage, with the MSA facing the audience, and the Stringmaster on my right so when I played it I'd face the rest of the band. I'd play the country songs on the MSA and the rock tunes on the Fender.

I also used 2 amps and a boatload of effects, some stereo.

It all worked out great, but it used to take 90 minutes to set everything up. Fortunately we worked 4 ir 5 nights a week usually for a month at a time in one place, and I didn't have to set up often. For single gigs, I only took one steel and one amp.

i always have my lap steel (EH100 or EH150) along w: my Zum or ShoBud
not only do i get off from playin' my lap steel, it helps in educatin' the people as to the evolution of the steel guitar

I have usually had a house gig of some kind where I can let a steel stay at the gig all the time. This makes it easy to bring in other steels to try out, which I do quite often. Makes for some interesting comparisons.

I always take two lap steels to gigs along with the PSG : a 25" tuned to G and a 27" tuned to C. Sometimes even the Dobro and the Weissenborn...
