I searched through my record collection at home, looking for records that have Jeff Newman playing. Jeff was such a great teacher, but it also should not be overlooked what great player he was. He did not record as often as others, so you won't find his name too often on record covers, but I found some that I haven't been listening to for quite a while.

One is a LP by the "First Nashville Jesus Band" called "Peace In The Valley" on Lamb & Lion 1008 from around 1975. The band was a combination of seasoned studio players like Jimmy Capps and Johnny Gimble, doing instrumental Gospel standards. Jeff is on Steel and Dobro.

The other one is by Carl & Pearl Butler, on CMH 6246 called "Honky Tonkitis" - pure Country and Honky Tonk sound from 1980, letting Jeff shine throughout the whole album.

I really enjoyed listening to these records, they very well add to Jeff Newman's legacy.

Kind Regards, Walter

Jerry:
You should be able to find the Jim & Jesse cd still. It was released in 2001 on the Pinecastle label.

The Carl Butler album was done in 1980 and released on LP only. Label was CMH. You may find a copy at a flea market.

I don't have the Mike Auldridge album or the one by First Nashville Jesus Band.

Way back in the early to mid 70s I was lucky enough to attend a recording session in which Jeff was the steel player and session leader. I wrote a couple of the songs that were recorded that day, ('course none of them turned out to be hits) so I may still have a few dozen of so of the 45s that resulted from that session. Don't know if anyone would be interested, but if I can find any, I'll donate them to b0b if he wants them.

I have casette of Jeff that's on the Double 10 label. It has Together Again that was released several years back with Tom Brumley, Paul Franklin and Lloyd Green sharing the duties. There's two versions, a short one and a long one both with vocals. Jeff does some fine playing on every song. Scotty may have some of these.

Jerry, you were asking if these records are still available - I found the Carl & Pearl Butler LP at
www.buckaroorecords.com

This is a site that all of you who are collecting records should check out. It is run by Jeff porterfield in Portland, Oregon. He has thousands of old records for sale (33rpm and 45rpm). I have been a customer for years, he has good service!

Kind Regards, Walter

Hello.
One of the most resent one that you will love is the last CD with Jim & Jesse "Our kind of country" W/the Opry staff band. This one has Jeff all over it,style of 60`s Buck Owens stuff, with lots of steel-one of the better records of straight country with steel I heard in a long time.
Also, don`t forget to continue to buy Jeff`s courses.Even tho he`s not with us anymore, his teaching will live on.I met him many times, and took a week long class from him in 78,and have been with him many times and places since then.I really miss him,and learned alot from his courses.Fran will run the Jeffran music in a good way,so you can support her,and Jeff that way.He will live on in his music.
Best from Egil.

Smiley Sir,

I learn something every day, thanks to guys like you, Carl, Jody, and Al Marcus. I didn't know that was Jeff on "You Lay So Easy On My Mind". Sure do remember the record, it was one of my favorite ballads when it came out. What year was that, 1974 or so? Man, that was great steel on there! As a matter of fact, that's a style and tone I catch myself trying to emulate frequently on ballads. Now I know who I've been trying to imitate...how 'bout that.

Thanks for the info!

Yes I've got all these albums that Jeff played on. There were 2 albums by the First Nashville Jesus Band and the other one was intitled, "Welcome to Nashville" Lamb and Lion #LL-1003, with Jeff playing some great steel. Also I have an album by the gospel guitarist Dwayne Friend called, "Just Pickin" Praise #PRS-185 and Jeff plays breaks in Neither do I condemn thee, The Old Rugged Cross, When we all get to heaven, I am a Pilgram and a song called Lion of Judah. Jeffs playing on all of these songs is great and is some of my favorite. Jeff is also is pictured on the cover of the "New Sho-Bud Pedal Steel Guitar Course, put out by Sho-Bud in 1969. It's a picture of Jeff on the Grand Ole Opry playing a Sho-Bud finger tip D-12. As I recall, Jeff was a regular steel player on the Opry from 1965 to 1969. Duane Becker

Clive, is that the same tune/version/mix that would have been released in the early to mid '60's? I'm sure I've got a version of Carl & Pearl Butler doing that tune on some 1/4" tape that was recorded from the radio circa 1965. Just wanted to compare steel solo's 'cause I've always liked that one.
