When I was youger, my dad always listened to country. Therefore, I was familiar with the pedal steel. I never thought I would be into it, though.

Then, I devoured Matthew Sweet's "Girlfriend." On 'Winona,' and 'Your Sweet Voice,' Greg Leisz plays hauntingly beautiful pedal steel. From then on I was hooked on pedal steel. I especially like when it's used in unexpected places, but I can always enjoy a hot, straightforward country steel as well. Anyway, of the many times an album has completely changed my way of musical thinking, "Girlfriend" started pushing back to my country roots.

Greg's playing on Bill Frisell's "Blues Dream" got me interested in steel. I'll have to check out the Matthew Sweet stuff, because I already own all of the Frisell/Leisz records.

I've always loved the pedal steel, but it was seeing Greg Leisz perform with Bill Frisell several times that convinced me to finally take it up. His lap-steel and regular guitar on most of the Peter Case albums is also excellent.

By the way, for one the most surprising, non traditional settings for pedal steel, check out Greg Leisz playing on the Meshell Ndegeocello album "Bitter."

Greg was featured on a lot of the Praire Home Companion Shows - you still can listen to those:
http://prairiehome.publicradio.org

Go to "Old Shows" and check out what they have (you'll probably be busy for several weeks!). Just for a start: Greg is on the shows 11/22/2003 and 11/29/2003.

Kind Regards, Walter
