If any of you have access to Usenet there are thousands of old country songs out there. In particular I have been listening to "Country Radio Grand Old Opry" MP3's taken from 1940's/1950's Opry broadcasts captured on vinyl. I use Newsrover and have broadband cable modem access through Road Runner which helps to download these.
The 59-05-29 broadcast features Hawkshaw Hawkins' band. Lloyd Green plays a solo of Panhandle Rag. Pretty Rare stuff. I think Lloyd is also playing backup pedal steel on other Hawkshaw cuts here.
Not all of the artists on the tracks are listed in the titles so you might want to listen all the way through.
Other hilites IMHO:
Grady Martin and Butterball Paige with Jerry Byrd playing lead for ET. Sounds strange to hear ET say "awww Grady Martin now". Grady actually copies Billy Byrd on these.
TONS of Jerry Byrd playing hot lead steel and getting a lot of solo breaks. Grady is on most of these also.
Lots of early pedal sounds some without the split A/B pedals, history in the making.
Ray Price does City Lights (great steel here too).
Billy Grammar doing a fingerstyle guitar solo.
Jackie Phelps backing Jean Shepard (long guitar solo)
Newsgroup is alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.country

It's not a web site. It's USENET. The simplest way to take a quick look at this stuff is to go to Internet Explorer, on the menu select Tools, then Read News, then working with your ISP set up the news reader to point to your ISP's news service. Then you can select and DL the music from the newsgroup mentioned above.
I use Newsrover to simplify and automate this whole process.

Man, I've been checking that newsgroup for years and all I ever found was Faith Hill and Garth Brooks. I'll look again.
There is a lot of good music on USENET. Lots of jazz and oldies. |

There are 3 country groups out there but the one I listed above is the most active and the other have mostly dupes of the main group. Also there is tons of Jazz, a 78 RPM group, the 50's and 60's groups have some country if you want to sort through them.
