I hear guys always saying "I bought (or heard) a "brand X" and they will invariably say "...it doesn't sound like a "xyz"..."

This kinda p#%%es mew off because if you want a "...xyz..." then get one.

As for me, I am totally dedicated to my LeGrande, so if I Buy another guitar, then I want somthing different (Fender, ZB, Ricky, Bigsby, Sho-Bud sound).

Am I missing something???

Thats exactly why I play a ZB Custom. Its not for everyone and thats okay. Its also the reason that I do NOT play other guitars that I've owned in the past. I don't have to compare mine with anything because its exactly the sound and guitar that I want. It took me years to get here though. I think that I am at the end of my search.

Well Ricky, there's a lot of amateurs out there who think "You are what you play". (Big Laugh. ) They harp incessantly about "tone". They bore other players to tears about the "sound" of this guitar or that guitar. They mention the brand they play so often (in every friggin' post?!?), you'd think they were getting paid to play it! I tolerate them because most are really nice guys, and they just don't know any better.

To me, it's how you play...and not what you play, that matters.

Yeah, Donnies got it right again, I went through at least 6 steel guitars in my first few years of playing. After 29 years I sound the same no matter which brand I play. Its all in your hands. In the beginning it takes time to get this & thats when you think its the guitar, not yourself & thats where most guys go wrong. I had my 2nd guitar back once many years after I had bought it the first time and it sounded fine to me!!

While there are differences in steel guitars. Donny's got it pretty much right. The playing is alot in a Masters hands.

Listen to Buddy Emmons. His artistry, expertise, and great tone, they come from Buddy. He would sound great on a cheese-grader!
And so does one of his heroes, Jerry Bryd.

No doubt about it these guys weren't out behind the barn when talent/giftedness was passed out.

I play a 14 string BMI and have since 1984. It satisfies me, keeps me occupied. I have also owned and played Sho-Buds, MSAs, Rikenbackers, Fenders and they all were great steels. My BMI keeps me working. Must be something right about what it sounds like. Goodluck to you. Go with what you like and you will be happy.

GOD bless you all!

I heard the sound I wanted and bought it in 1979. Sold it in 1983, and thankfully, was able to get it back in 1991. After 13 years, I still think I made the right choice.

I'm with you on this one Kevin.
After trying out many steels and just "messing" with the adjustments and checking out the many different types of undercarriage, I find that the old Z.Bs. do "it" for me.

I know exactly what you mean.

Probably 90% of the time I hear people say that Brand X doesn't sound like Brand Y, Brand Y=Emmons. And if you look further, Brand Y (the 'gold standard') is a push-pull. Yes there are those who DON'T care for the sound of a push-pull, but even some of them recognize the clarity of midrange and responsiveness to the touch of the player that those great old Emmons guitars have -- often to a greater degree than those mfgd today. For mechanical and musical reasons, many people, including the guy who dreamed up the design for the push-pull, chose a modern guitar. In my estimation, the LeGrande guitars sound more like an Emmons (duh) than does a ZumSteel or Mullen or ????

The point about having a great guitar and moving on to another brand for a change is also well taken. I played a ZumSteel for 20 years and, rather than buying another, I went to Emmons pp and Fessenden guitars and never looked back. I know that Bruce (or Del Mullen or Ed Fulawka or Paul Franklin, among others) will build me a great guitar. And I also know that Jerry Fessenden builds the one I choose as the best made today. No, it doesn't sound like an Emmons push-pull. But I can make both sound like ME, so that's what I'll play.

Good topic.

Some folks are always looking to the guitar for tone. There's some there, but there are many other places to look. Your technique, your rig, your attitude, and a lot of other factors are always at play.

Reminds me of my first meeting with Wayne Galey. He was playing a Fender 1000 that he had modified with extra strings on each neck and 3 Knee levers. Made my brand new Fender 2000 sound like a Nr2 wash tub. The secret seems to be in the hands and the ear.

I guess the CAPS thing is like styles of music.
(Or Steels, to get back on topic)
What you might like, somone else doesn't.

It's OK with me. I won't listen to your CD if you're playing RAP just like I won't read your post if it's all caps.

You might enjoy the style. If so have a blast.

Cal Sharp,

Thanks for the tip on the font. I hope it helps some of our disadvantaged members. BTW, nice use of the word "umbrage" in your 1983 Inside Country Music magazine article!!
