So this is what I am asking....other than jamming and playing all the licks we know in the first 12 bars..how many are playing in bands that play some, many, several or all songs very close to the recorded versions and require the Steel parts to be right on the button or as close as possible. I'm not talkin' about just the Intro's and solo's but rather the entire tune with the recorded fills in the exact right places ?

I am now working in a band that plays several / many tunes very very close to the grain..The Tele player has it down, pretty much all the parts..and I am to play " just like the record"..or as close as possible, or at least in the right places..

At first the idea of doing this was not really to my liking.. I would play close or similar..but not really "Right There"..

Now after doing this a few weeks and taking a very close listen to some of the tunes..I gotta say..this is very disciplined..Vince tunes, Brad P. tunes, Waylon tunes..not only does it require some serious woodsheding along with regular practice to get those signature phrases....it's kinda fun..


Playing in the vain of Paul, Mike Jones, John Hughey , Moon etc..is certainly a learning experience..and at the end of the day very educational and really worthwhile..

I'm not saying I'm there 100% but I'm a whole lot closer this week than last week !

Oh..we do jam too..

I've done that from time to time. It's challenging and it's fun the first 10 times you perform the song. The problem is that once you have it down, there's no room to grow. Ultimately I found it stifling as an artist.

To me there's art and there's craft. Knowing the craft is necessary to perform the art. There's a lot of value in learning the parts just like the record, but you can't let it end there.

Been there, done that. I don't care for it.

Seriously, Bobby's got the same idea I do. It's a challenge at first, but once you get it down...where are you? It becomes boring mighty fast. Not only to you, but to your audience. We have the hit records and CD's at home. Why go out to hear them? Why would I go see a great band (more than once) that does things exactly the same?

Except for learning someone's song when it comes out, there's no growth, no imagination, no new "inspiration"...except for that of someone else. You're a "copying machine", no more...no less.

Be adventurous! Do your own thing. No one gets famous playing like (or trying to play like) someone else.

I totally agree..thats why I moved slow with this band..the good news is there are not all that many tunes that are "Just like the record"..and most are versions which being close to the pocket are good close enough..

It's an excellent excercise in discipline though..keeps ya of the mindset that it's not about you !
