I have been listening to the new CD by The Calvary Cowboys for the last week. If you love fantastic pedal steel playing by an absolute master you need this CD. The CD was recorded/mixed by Steve Palousek who also does the steel guitar chores. The music is Christian country and is simply the best country CD I have heard in a long time. Though Christian themed, the CD is easily on par with any release I've heard in recent years. It brings to mind the best of Buck/Merle/Waylon/Ray.... no joke.
The steel playing by Steve is utterly brilliant. You really need to listen to some of the subtle work he does behind the singer to appreciate the talent involved. Of course, most of the steel work is upfront in your face.
I'm not kidding guys... I have no financial interest in this of any kind. If you don't get it, you are missing a true gem.
They are on a record label and this is a commercial release. You can also obtain this at their website www.calvarycowboys.com
BTW... you can listen to their CD at the website. The CD is titled "Living For Jesus"

I honestly don't understand why we seem to hear so little about Steve Palousek - in my opinion, he's simply one of the most accomplished players of our day.
A few years ago, my friend Andy Reiss (now of the Time Jumpers) invited me down to The Nashville Nightlife on Music Valley Drive to sit in with the band on his Telecaster. The steel player - of whom I'd never heard - was Steve, and my jaw dropped. What a thrill - and a challenge - it was to trade licks with him. I left the venue with a whole new slant on what could be done on PSG.
Truly one of the 'Greats'.

What great cuts! Steve P. is often left out of our discussions on steel guitar greats. I think he fits into this category. |

I just realized that these are only thirty second or so snippets of the tunes. Tune number one and two have good steel in the first thirty seconds, but believe me that the real goldmine is deeper in the songs. I've known Steve for a long time and he never ceases to amaze me. This CD was recorded in his Belton studio. True pro big league recording calibre!

I'd like to hear that CD.
I became aware of Steve's country chops after seeing him back up Ray Price on Austin City Limits.
Stunning! |

I have a friend here in the Austin area, Craig Crowder, that recorded a country gospel album at Hilltop Studio in Nashville a few years ago, and Steve did an awesome job on it too. I think Zane King did the production work on it, so it was probably a little bit slanted toward the steel guitar, don't you think? I really enjoyed both of these guys when they played the ISGC shows years ago.
