I am just curious how many play the steel daily. Because of my schedule, and other things I don't get to play much.About the only playing I get to do is checking out a guitar when I have repaired it or a customer has a problem that needs checked. I would love to have a schedule that I could play daily. Ed Naylor Steel Guitar Works

I try to practice every day. Rigar Mortis sets in these old fingers if I don't.

Hi Ed,

Ever since I bought a second steel, and as a result can leave one set up and one ready to go out the door, I find I play every single day. I even bought an extra bar, so I have no excuse not to sit down and play before I leave for work in the morning, or right when I get home. I've been playing much more as a result.

I definitely play steel every day. I play steel in the afternoons because my left hand doesn't cooperate as much in the mornings. Last night I played along with an album that had twenty songs on it and I played straight through. I had to rest my left hand some, but I played along with every song on the album. Hi Ed
Yepper, I play every day of the year. Sometimes for hours, sometimes for only a few minutes.
Sometimes when Im away from my steel, I may get a tune or lick in my head, and try to work it out in my mind and as soon as Im back home I sit down at my steel and see how close I was to being correct on my thoughts.

My boss "David Church" is having his buss re-decorated inside and I asked for a music room in the back so I could practice on the road,, but he has a small problem with that. It would mean I would be playing in the dressing room all the time

Yes.

Just to make sure, I'll always set my guitar up when I bring it back from a gig - that night - then it's all ready again next morning.

That way, there's no excuse....

I play some every day. There are days where I don't want to practice, but other than those the only time I skip a day is if I just am not home early enough to work out without bugging my neighbors.

Besides gigging 3-5 nights a week and rehearsing w/the band 1-2 times a week, every day I try to get in an hour - maybe two of solitary woodshedding. These days I'm splitting the time up evenly between pedal,non-pedal and dobro. If I'm trying to learn a particular line or figure, etc, besides tabbing it out I'll burn a CD of it where it repeats the line 20 or 30 times in a row and then just have the music minus the figure repeat 20 or 30 times in a row. Then I just play along relentlessly w/the CD till it sinks into this thick skull and these lame fingers.I also run through the most difficult things I do on the bandstand like my break on Orange Blossom Special,Ragtime Annie and a few other bluegrass tunes about 10 times in a row - just for maintenance. Sometimes I feel like I'm wading through mud but I've gotta keep moving forward at all cost.BTW,anyone practice along with one of those phrase samplers? What is the best one? -MJ-

I've been without a second steel for a while now - which is why I've ordered a new JCH!!!

When it gets here, I wonder which one will stay in the case - the new 'baby' or the Emmons.....? Hmmmm....

They used to say about practicing on any instrument: If you miss practice one day, you'll know it. If you miss practice for a few days, your family will know it, and if you miss any longer than that, the whole world will know it! {Everyone knows me!}

I try to get at least some hands on time everyday.

If you drop the contrebasse for even one day your band will know it,
if you drop it for 3 days anyone who has heard you play on a good day knows it,
drop it for 3 weeks and any 10 year old knows it and comments.

The steel is a completely different set of muscle usage, but the lack of frets and many simultaneous functions also requiere constant mantainance.
At the very least I try to run some standard licks that come naturally on both necks,
and try something I don't know on both.

Not any more. I did for years, but I have only touched it once since the ISGC last year. Reason?

Don't really have one; except to say my interests for some reason are in different entities now. So not sure about tomorrow.

I will add the following. For the 44 yrs I was in the workplace, I heard story after story of ppl being bored to death after they retired. Someone even offered statistics saying that the average life expectancy was 6 mos from retirement date.

Well I retired in '96. And I have not been bored one second. I love the freedom to do what I want when I want to. I love every aspect of retirment. So who knows? Maybe my playing days are over.

If so, fine. If I get the urge I have an Emmons LeGrande II in my office all setup and an Excel U-12 in my music room all setup. So all I have to do is set down to one of them thangs and try to pick to my heart's content. I use the work pick since I could never play it any way.

Right now that is not my interest.

In a word, Jesus has blessed me with gifts unfathonable in my mind. And since I have enough to do to last until age 137, I am having a literal ball . Praise his precious holy name,

carl

John, I heard a little different version. If you miss one day of practice, you will know it. If you miss two days, the conductor will know it. If you miss three days, the audience will know it.

I have a D-10 pp set up all the time in a spare bedroom but, I don't practice regular at all. Maybe several days in a row if I'm fired up with something, and maybe not for a month. I usually play once a week with the band and I at least get a good workout as I carry a lot of the lead and fills either solo or in parts with fiddle and guitar. Too many hobbies and a day time job.
