I have seen so many of these wierd bars in my 57 years of playing. These things are all very impractical for speed, technic, slants, et al. About the only purpose I can see for "inventions" such as this one is for someone who is severly affected by arthritis and cannot hold onto a bar in the normal way. |

Hey, drill two holes thru the left hand index finger and dropped bars are history. Use 1/4"-20 UNC nuts w/lockwashers for secure attachement. Tighten to 100 in-lbs. Universal fit.
Personally I think the threads on the posts would get irritating REAL fast, with or without the rubber bumpers. |

Well, there are folks out there that, for whatever reason, can't hold a bar in the normal fashion, I'm one of them. Got some nerves clipped in an accident when I was a kid. I look at all these crazy bar variations hoping one might help.
Most of all of them though, like Steiner says, don't allow for slants. I am using a couple bars Gary Swallows made for me with attached leather rings that hold the bar to my hand. I sent Gary drawings for a swivel bar that would do slants but he's so busy and the need so small it's not worth his time to try and build it. At this point I do slants, such as they are, by piveting my entire wrist, David Lindley does them that way. But it's not really too good, so I keep looking. |

Sounds like someone needs to come up with the "Post-it" notes of steels - they only stick when you want them to...

Megga dittos George,
The late Harold Flynn found he could no longer hold his bar after an attack of arthritis, so he welded a brass ring on to the top of his bar so his first finger could keep it under control. I found that not only couragous but engenious.
Having said that, I believe that for normal applications, there is not a better answer for the item that named our beloved instrument, than a perfectly round, smooth, bullet nosed steel bar with a recess in the back of for slanting. I have never seen anything that comes close to being THE bar that we need to play the steel guitar except what most of us use.
Such thing as Stevens bars, double rounded bars, flat bars, curved or slotted bars, etc, etc is tantamount to putting training wheels on a child's bicycle IMO.
And Lord knows they do serve a real purpose. Except for that I believe we simply need to grow up an learn to use that bar descibed above.
