What Fred Said:
Two of his vinyls that may still be found are "Nashville Sundown"---Curly plays the songs of Gordon Lightfoot: Early Morning Rain, Sundown, Talking in Your Sleep, etc, and the other is his best I think; "Big Hits On Big Steel"---The Race Is On, Make the World Go Away, Crying Time, King of the Road, etc. The best song on the latter, IMHO, is "A Thing Called Sadness". Makes the hackles rise on the back of the neck. Hope this helps some.

For one of his all time finest backups, try to get a copy of Stan Hitchcock's "Shadow of Your Smile".
Apparently Stan felt the same way we do, since he did what FEW stars have ever done; and that is to announce the name of the player who is about to take a break.
God bless CC, SH and all of you,

Carl I had forgotten about that topic that I started some time back. AAron, go here and you'll find quite a bit on Curley and his music.

Thanks a lot. I've been listening to his recordings with Joe Venuti and Jethro Burns and they are just tremendous. I want more! |

I met a guy in Nashville back in about 1982 that said he was Curley Chalkers Son. At the time I wasn't familiar with Curleys playing, but the guy that said he was his son tought me a song on the acoustic 6 string by Dan Fogelberg (Leader of the Band). So now, 22 years later Im currious what the guys name was that tought me the song. If anybody know's his sons name let me know or if you see this post Hello!!!! |

They're all great but my all time favorite is his "Big Hits On Big Steel" followed by his Counterpoint project with the big orchestra. Monstrous playing by one of the greatest ever. It wasn't what he did but how he did it, that set him apart. The fire in his playing has yet to be duplicated by anyone. |

I don't know if my LP record of "Big Hits ON Big Steel" can take another pass with a needle through it. It's been played a bunch. |
