Gretsch has a couple of lap steels on the market. They look kind of neat. Has anyone had any experience with them? The two models look very much alike; however, there is quite a price difference between the two. One is priced around $375 and the other is over $1,000. How can there be that much difference?

Gretsch (Fender) is testing the market to decide if this will be profitable and how much interest they generate...Fender is behind it but will not commit themselves.

Jody,
Thanks for the response. There are a few of the least costly models around but have yet to see any of the $1000 models. Where ever I look there ia a 2-3 week delivery time. It almost looks like they wait for a sale and then order one.

I've had several of the lower priced Gretsch models come through my online steel store, and they seeem to be very solid midlevel steels. Very good fit and finish, really sharp looking, good parts, acceptable (not outstanding) tone and sustain. I would certainly recommend for a beginner or as a second instrument to a pedal player. It's a big jump up in price to the more substantial George Boards, (now Defunct) Sierra, etc. In the same price range I'd probably recommend the Chandlers over the Gretsches I've seen.

Mark,
Have you ever seen or heard the high end Gretsch steel now being marketed? It is from the "Historic" section and is built from different wood and has the classic Gretsch pickup on it. I even downloaded a picture from an Italian music dealer that has gold hardware on it. Very sharp looking!!

Erv, I haven't run across one of those yet, but I'd like to- the cheaper ones are pretty decent. I don't know if it would be worth 1K though! |

I have a D6 Gretsch Electromatic from the late 1950's.
Looks like 2 Supros stuck together.
I had the old screw connector replaced with a jack and the pots cleaned.
Plays great.
Anyone else come across one of these?

No -- not as ornate.
Seems to me that the item went for a low price.
In the Uk we can expect to pay maybe 2x that.
Mine also does not have legs and I expect it is not as heavy as the one listed on Ebay (otherwise I would have no circulation in my legs at all).
