Just read the post about the Duane Eddy-album and thought it would be nice to post something about instrumental albums featuring other instruments than the Steel, but leaving lots of space for interesting Steel work. Bobby Hicks' Texas Crapshooter album comes to my mind (Buddy Emmons), Ron Knuth on Fiddle (Jim Vest), Josh Graves on Dobro (Gene O'Neal, Lloyd Green), Pig Robbins (also Lloyd Green)...

Also, many road bands recorded their own instrumental albums, of course featuring the Steel Guitar for example the Chreokee Cowboys (Buddy Emmons), the Strangers (Norman Hamlet), the Buckaroos (Tom Brumley), the Texas Troubadours (Buddy Charleton), the Pridesmen (Gene O'Neal), the Po' Boys (Sonny Garrish) and...

Lots of interesting records to be discovered!

I think it's a great idea! Some of the finest steel guitar performances delivered by these outstanding steel guitar artists are to be found on recordings under the names of others, vocalists, and not their own.
Duane Eddy's old album to me, has some of the finest examples of what Buddy Emmons has ever done. It was that album that moved me to acquire an Emmons P/P back in 1972.
The same applies to Lloyd Green, Hal Rugg and countless other truly great musicians.

Sad fact is, not that many "road bands"that can get the backing to do what you speak of.
I'm sure there's a number of them capable enough.

Sure was nice back when....I have a few Buckaros(sp)Nashville Bar Assn,

Ricky Van Shelton's band, The Shelltones, did an album a couple of years ago with Tommy Hannum, also George Strait's Ace In The Hole Band did an album with Mike Daily on Steel and guest vocals by Mel Tillis and Darrell McCall.

Chet Atkins' first 12" RCA-album "Session With Chet Atkins" features Bud Isaacs. Hard to find, but well worth the search are the old Decca series of Dance-O-Rama albums: Spade Cooley, Tex Williams, Billy Gray, Bob Wills, Grady Martin etc. All mostly instrumental with lots of great steel.

Mother Maybelle Carter has an instrumental album out in ca. 1973, with her on guitar and autoharp, with the cream of the pickers (Bobby Thompson, Jimmy Colvard etc.). Pete Drake and Stu Basore are on Steel!

I haven't seen Charlie McCoy mentioned yet. All of his harmonica albums had lots of steel on them. One of the best steel solo's I have ever heard was Curly Chalker on Charlie's version of "Danny Boy". All of Charlies albums had a list of musicians a mile long. Lloyd Green also played on most if not all of the albums, and I can't remember who else. I haven't listened to them in several years but remembering the great music on them makes me want to dig them out and listen again.

Some old Johnny Bush recordings featured Buddy Emmons and Curly Chalker both. If you want to hear both of them tearing it up on the same song, find the old cut of "Tennessee to Texas".

Chet Atkins put out a "Superpickers" album years ago also that had lots of Weldon Myrick on it.

OOPS, Tony had already mentioned Charlie McCoy, but I had forgotten about Russ Hicks playing with him. Charlie played at ISGC several years ago, and put on a great show.

I just thought about some of the great fiddle players - Mark O'Connor had Paul Franklin on his album and Byron berline has some beautiful steel work by Jay Dee Maness...
