Anyone know who the steel player is on these old Mercury sides by George Jones such as Why Baby Why, Just One More, Don't Stop the Music etc. Sounds like the same guy from tune to tune. Maybe just one pedal doing the AB thing. Bud Isaacs maybe?
Thanks, Bill W

I don't know who played on the Starday records, but it sounds like Buddy Emmons got a lot of work on the United Artists label.

I was at a party with George and he told me it was Buddy Emmons on "Don't Stop The Music". The subject came up as " Don't Stop The Music" is my favorite George Jones song. Of course, we were not in full control of our mental capacities. Jody.

Why, Baby, Why was recorded in the Beaumont/houston area, if I recall correctly. It seems unlikely that Pappy Dailey and Jack Starnes(Starday), would have paid Buddy Emmons to travel from Tennessee to Texas to record on an, at the time, unknown artists first recordings. I also believe that Buddy would have been working with Little Jimmy Dickens at that time. I am referring to the very first Starday recordings. Maybe someone in Texas will read this and have a better idea. Either that, or someone with a box set of some sort. Interesting question.

Oops! Just reread the original post. When I originaly replied, I was thinking strictly Starday recordings like: Ain't No Money In This Deal, etc. Sorry.

As far as those Starday recordings are concerned, I think I read on this very forum that it was Herb Remington playing steel.

Chris: Not to hijack the originality of this thread, but what stuff are you referring to that Shot Jackson played on (songs)? Just curious.
