This is really an excellent CD. I was expecting it to be good, because I have heard Tommy play a few times and I know how good he is, but even so, I was pleasently surprised.
Tommy, who is Atlanta's leading session steel guitarist, is a world class player. He has the skills and finesse most of us only wish we had. On this CD he applies those skills to a variety of well known songs in different styles. Some of the titles include "Dance With Me" which is on it's way to becoming a steel guitar standard. Pop/R&B hits Under The Boardwalk and Georgia, and country hits "Highway 40 blues" and "Till the end of the world."
What makes this CD special is not the material though, but the quality of Tommy's playing. As I said earlier Tommy is a world class player, and he really makes his Zum SING. He is the kind of player who is so skilled his technique is completely automatic, and he concentrates on playing with soul.
I think I hate him
I think everybody who loves the steel guitar will really enjoy this CD. Thumbs Up.

I like Donna and I like Tommys playing but I had to move out of Atlanta because he had all the steel playing jobs in the state. So I really hate him. Just kidding Tom. Next time I get to Atlanta I'll buy you a Varsity hot dog. |

Yes, yes, yes, a very nice cd it's in the minivan all the time.
Dance with me is a great steel tune,
Georgia On My Mind is sweet as buttermilk
and there is a BE flavored jazz/blues tune I really like too.
He has most of the classic steel styles down cold, sounds like himself, with nods to some personal favorites, but always sounds like Tommy Dodd.
A clean recording and nice song selection.
A great job from a very nice gentileman I was pleased to meet at ISGC.
And Donna is a pip too.[This message was edited by David L. Donald on 08 December 2003 at 12:31 AM.] |

I like Donna..Tommy's, well, I suppose he's awright..
I'm only serious..
Those of us that live in the SC area and go to Saluda get to see and hear Tommy often..
His sets are always top shelf but I think if he had it to do all over again he would be a stand up comic...or a late night TV talk show host..he's got that gift too...
Always nice to see, hear and talk to Tommy...

I first saw Tommy Dodd years ago at a little shindig in Powerderville, SC.
I thought then he was the greatest "local" player I ever heard (save Mac Atcheson). I continue to hold that opinion. Tommy is truly a most gifted musician. He not only KNOWS what to play and how to play it, he "feels" it before most of us are aware of it.
And that is what separates greats from "good ole boys"
May Jesus continue to nurture this man's awesome gift, and may HE richly bless all of you,

My thanks to all of you for your kind words. Especially, my bud Mr. Perlowin. To have your musical endeavors be critically acclaimed by the likes of those above, or anyone within this great forum, is truly humbling. The secret to a good CD project is to surround yourself with great musicians and technicians who can work wonders for you with your chosen material. But most of all, play what you feel. I believe that music comes from your heart, thru your mind, and out of your hands (& feet in the case of steel players) into your instrument.
Just a couple of thoughts,
1) to those of you with comments about Donna……….yes, she’s a keeper!!!
2) Fred, can’t wait to come out to Phoenix in January
3) b0b, Thanks for helping the brotherhood of steel guitar with this great cyber medium. A new batch of CD’s are in the mail to the forum offices…
4) David Donald, thanks for you highly respected opinion and offering me your help with my other situation. (I will probably have a CPAP machine under the Christmas tree!)
5) John Floyd, now I know why you keep such a watchful eye on my booth in Saluda. (Inside scoop, she’s not a natural blonde)
6) Mr. Ferguson, I know Pack-A-Seats will turn over. But, I still think you gave mine a push when I stood up to dance while playing my solo in Atlanta a few years back
Again, thank you all for acknowledging our efforts on the new CD.
Tommy D.
