After about a year of effort, I have completed the Guitar Styles of Roy Nichols video. It is available at terrydownsmusic.com . The proceeds of this video will go to the Nichols family. It is available on DVD and VHS.
The video features Stealin' Corn. In addition to the guitar part, it has the steel guitar part on music score and "guitar" tablature. Although the notes are captured, I haven't figured out a good way to play the steel part. If anyone comes up with steel tab, let me know and I will put it on the website.
Best regards,

Terry, I greatly appreciate your commitment to Roy' technique. After years of worshiping Roy, I got the chance to play for Marcia in Ca. in the 70's, shortly before the death. I was impressed to know that Marcia's technique was a little smoother and finessed, I guess womanly touch. I still think Roy was the man, but Marsha was the woman also. |

Hey Terry, I checked out your tab, and DVDs on R.N. I am impressed. Any one who is wanting to capture the Roy Nichols style, and licks should have no problem, by using your info. and a lot of practice.
I found the camera shots good, your playing was excellent, and all the personal info on Roy was very interesting...
I am going to give it another look when I get a chance...Cya....Ronnie |

Thanks Roger. I appreciate the nice comments and the info on Marcia.
Ronnie,
Thanks so much for the comments on the project. I certainly value the opinion of a true professional like yourself. I know you are a great guitarist too, so I'm glad you found this interesting. I've had several good comments on the Roy Nichols history section. Roy had an interesting career. It took some digging, but ultimately Roy's wife Quita straightened me out on it. I have involved her in the project all along.
I encourage everyone to go see a Charley Pride Show and see Ronnie Miller play. He is an oustanding musician and a true gentleman.
Regards,
Terry |

Terry;
I got the DVD in the mail yesterday. It works in both DVD players. I haven't had a chance to watch but five minutes of it, but it looks great! I look forward to setting down with it, a guitar and some time. Looks to be fun!

Not only is Terry a close friend, but what i consider to be one of the best musicians i have ever crossed paths with in almost 30 years of playing. The Guitar Styles of Roy Nichols is just as good as i thought it would be when Terry told me about it. The tone is Roy Nichols and the execution of the licks sounds like Roy sitting in the room with you.Great for guitar players. Better for us steel players wanting to copy those great licks. Great job Terry. Corky. |

Corky,
Thanks so much for the kind words. You are an awesome musician and a true gentleman.
You guys need to go see Corky play with Gene Watson. It is as good as it gets when it comes to REAL country music.
Ivan,
Thanks to you for the kind words too. It never ceases to amaze me how far spread Roy's influence is on musicians around the world.
I think more steel players have bought the video than guitar players.
Thanks so much,
Terry[This message was edited by Terry Downs on 13 November 2003 at 06:39 PM.] |
