Sure wish I could have been there... too bad I was only six years old at that time...

Where was it at, John? Do you know? I'm fuzzy (kinda literally) on a lot of what I saw back then--I know I saw Jerry w/ the Riders a couple of times. Did Buddy do any Rider sets while the Riders were touring w/the Dead, before they went on their own?

---ooops---just saw the other thread. But still some unanswered questions, I think??

See the other post-but yes, the Riders did tour with the Dead for a while as their opening act before they went totally on their own. Really, once Cage was added, the entire sound of the band changed, and they really tok off-although for about 6 months Cage caught crap about taking over for Garcia-and some folks thought he WAS Garcia. I think Garcia thought it was 50/50 whether they'd make it. Keep in mind that no one has ever taken over Garcia's spot in any project and succeeded at the same level, except Cage. Usually the projects would die off or become a much smaller Force-the New Riders became huge. But that's because Cage just jumped up and took the bull by the horns-I can't think of anyone, except maybe Young, that was that much of a lead player in a band on Steel. I mean Cage was a full blown out front Rock Star, almost immediately. His influence on players my age is immense, and he is in many cases the first guy we ever heard play the instrument.

Having Buddy Cage & Jay Dee as my 2 major early role models and the fact that they both play "all the time" during most songs has gotten me into more trouble with overplaying through the years! LOL
I've learned that it's a fine line to be able to do as well as they do and not seem to be overplaying.
It just seemed to be the way it was done if you listen to them play!

I don't know where the first Cage show was at but I can guarantee I was at the 1st NY Metro area show! As you stated, the Riders opened for the Dead at that time and you are on the money. Cage jumped in and IMHO he was brilliant in his approach. He never tried to do Garcia's parts. Garcia's genius was his taste. When it came to steel, Cage was Goliath and Garcia was David. Cage showed up, both necks blazing, and never looked back! He introduced the fans to steel as he envisioned it. That's why he was able to take that spot! Your correct in saying that he was a big part of the Rider's beng able to move beyond an opening act for the Dead and becoming huge on their own. And right again when pointing out that the only other steeler that could have pulled that off would probably have been Rusty Young! They were certifiable "stars" back than and continue to make great music today! They brought alot of people to steel "awareness" and opened the doors to appreciate the masters they were influenced by!
Long story shorter - Buddy Cage was huge back than and though the music business is not always kind, he's 30 years better and just as important!
Thanks for this thread!

From Cage's recollection:

Fox Theater - Atlanta. Gar was supposed to set up with me but backed down and caught a later flight. He actually did us another favor - threw us in the deep end of the pool. I knew how to get it on but he wasn't sure about the band. It worked. We made it work. Nelson is just such an outstanding player!

I went early with the crew (nrps) to hang and whilst persuing a dressing room, I stumbled upon Garcia - alone with his guitar in one small room. It was 2 PM! I said, "Hey Jerry, what a shock seeing you here so early - is this really necessary?" [He was into a bucket of Colonel Sanders] He chuckled that Jerry-chuckle and said, "Oh...I'm ALWAYS here! They never let me leave!" bc
