Anyone remember Judy Lynn who sang at the Golden Nuggett in Vegas in the 60's? I think her steel player was Gene O'neil of Amarillo? He did a strong lick on the tune"Howdy Neighbor Howdy".

How about Dick Roberts? He was Spade's 1st steeler. What did he do prior to, and after his gig with Cooley?

As the poster said, Gene has passed on. Also I have no idea what ever happened to Judy Lynn. Interestingly, she had one fine band when she was in the Las Vegas, Reno and Lake Tahoe circuit in her prime.

Joel Price, (formerly bass player for Little Jimmy Dickens) fronted the band and played bass.

Bobby Hicks, fiddle player now with Ricky Skaggs

Tommy Williams, fiddle player for sooo many and then a virtuoso in his own right; until his tragic accident

And of course Gene, with his incredible embellshment to Judy's unique voice as he played his gorgeous Sho-Buds. Colonel Tom Parker (Elvis' manager) coaxed Gene to leave her and go with the then unknown
Charlie Pride. Which later made Gene the envy of most other steel players for what Charlied did for him.

Tragically, Gene went into a hospital to get a tonselectomy, and they cut an artery to the brain accidently and he was made an instant "vegetable" because they could not get it cauterized quick enough before pemanent brain damage set in. Years later, the family allowed them to "pull the plug"

He was one of my dearest friends on this earth. I miss him terribly.

Judy was one fabulous entertainer and fit perfectly in that section of the country. But she never caught on in Nashville; lo her manager husband tried desparately to make it fly.

She was a stunningly beautiful woman with crowd appeal second to few. However it was limited to the audience; because to the band and others who had to work for her she was, as Tommy so eloquently put it one night,

"The only person on this earth that could truly tick off the statue of liberty"

And if you ever worked for her I do believe you would agree with him,

A good friend of mine here in Modesto and great guitar played with Judy in those days by the name of Leon Richardson, who also played with Little Jimmy Dickins when Buddy E was there..

Billy, I forgot all about the Skulls houseband liers poker tournaments in the alley during breaks. I never participated but I got a kick out of watching these guys lose they're money. I remember Gene O'neil being a very enthusiastic player. I sure feel lucky to have had the opportunity to watch him play steel almost 5 nights a week. I bet he's doin a little steel playin' up there too!

One time back in the early 80's I guess it was..I was on business in Nashville for a few days and had the great opportunity to sit right in front of Gene at one of the clubs in the Alley...I pretty much stayed the whole night and Gene was actually talking to me while playing and telling me what it was he was doing..well as much as he could..

We had a few beers together during the breaks (as I recall) and he was really very gracious..sharing a great deal of Steel knowledge with me. He showed me some very simple basic positions on the C6th that he worked out of.Gene was clearly a major influence on me for playing the lower ten..

Gene was really the primary lead Instrument in the band and if I remember correctly I believe the gal singing, who was pretty good, was an attractive blonde , also very nice and spent a great deal of time talking with me as well.

I guess you can tell by now the place was pretty dead..I was one of the very few in the room...

I'm sure glad I crossed paths with Gene...

Carl,

You're right about the fiddle players but you left out Buddy Spicher who Bobby Hicks replaced. Also Hicks aint with Skaggs anymore. He's working for Jesse McReynolds.

Thank you Mike for the correction. I was not aware that Buddy replaced Bobby. When Gene left Judy, I left her also, since it was Gene I came to see. I knew Bobby left her later since I saw him frequently with Ricky.

Also I did not know that bobby is now with Jesse. So my assumption was based on past observation. However, "Ve shuud not ahssooome". After all players change in the music business like the weather. The days of Little Roy and Eddy Arnold are long since gone.

I stand corrected. Thanks again,

May Jesus always bless you and yours,

Carl-That is sad About Gene. What kind of a hospital that would allow that. If he was on the operating table, they could have stopped that from causing any damage. Maybe they were all out for coffee or something when it happened. I am so sorry to hear that, how many goof ups do you never hear of.....

I talked to Gene During his breaks with Charley Pride at Mr. Luckey"s in Phoneix in the 70's. We had a couple of beers together. He was a nice guy and a very good player. God Bless him.......al

I caught the Judy Lynn show in Vegas when I went to pick up my first pedal steel, that I bought second hand. It was a Fender and the guy who sold it to me took me to the Nuggett and said how great the band was. I sent a note to Judy and requested an instrumental tune; she asked who had requested this and Gene tore it up. The tune was "Buds Bounce".
He was really great.

Last I heard, Judy was still around, and very active in church. She quit playing music to become a minister about 20 years ago. Her band was always one of the best dressed in country music.

Charlie, did Gene copy the "Howdy Neighbor" lick from Porter's (Weldon's) version? This ride is one of my all-time faves!

I don't know. I have very little inside info in this regard. That lick has always stuck with me and I do it in "C" to try to come close (I'm a bedroom picker) using the A&B pedals, flat the E string on the way to the 8th fret etc. I have the highest respect for the pros who possess the talent and disipline to spend over a hot steel all day and entertain guys like me. But if someone wasn't always raising the bar it wouldn't be as much fun. God bless those pioneers.

Carl,

Buddy didn't replace Bobby it was the other way around. Also I was reminded that the great guitar player Pete Wade also played in Judy's band. And while she was in Nashville Lloyd Green worked for her[pre Gene ONeal].
