I've been recommended to see Calexico when they come to Irving Plaza in NYC on Friday. Can anybody tell me about their steel guitarist Paul Niehaus or the band in general? |

Another Niehaus that plays steel guitar?
Impossible!! I bet he isn't a left-handed Norwegian, though!

I've had the pleasure of seeing Calexico about half-dozen times or so, and I love them. Paul plays a Sho-Bud, nice tasteful playing. Calexico features (most of the time) a trap-kit drummer, upright bass, trumpets, nylon string guitar and steel. They play more and more songs with lyrics nowadays, but still work in some instrumentals. The music is 'desert-y', with dreamy trumpet lines, kind of a south of the border feel, kinda twangy at times. I think they are great, and my favorite times seeing them have been outdoors....
here is a link to their website: http://www.casadecalexico.com/
I think there are probably some tunes to download and/or listen to there as well....

I'd highly recommend seeing them if you get a chance. I'd describe their music as alt.western (rather than alt.country). There's a definite mariachi feel to a lot of their songs. The stuff I've heard Paul Niehaus play fits beautifully within their music. The new CD "Feast of Wire" has been getting rave reviews.
Their web site has more information.

This is a great, great band. Imagine picking along to Ennio Morricone's the Good, the Bad and the Ugly soundtrack. Sounds good, eh Blondie? |
