Tom was my good friend for many years. We travelled to conventions together and I bunked in his apartment. I had the opportunity to mess around with that very guitar shown on the MAPLE cover. It was well made and had a tone that was quite unique, especially when Tom played it. He had a great collection of Hawaiian recordings and was the founder/owner of MAPLE records. MAPLE turned out about 16 titles before Tom passed away so suddenly while playing golf. Amongst those discs were some beautiful productions by Jerry, Rudy Wairata, also the only solo recording ever made by David Keli'i. Real treasures to have today.

Just an added note: When I first met Tom, he was a traveling salesman for a large musical wholesale firm, (I was in retail at the time). He often expressed his love for Hawaiian music but at that time, he had not touched a steel guitar. He commenced playing rather late in life, however he sure made up for lost time. I often think of him as being the "Roy Smeck" of Canada...his style was always fast, loved playing polkas!

I have Jerry Byrd's and David Kelii's ablums you listed. To me Jerry's album is some of the sweetest and most beautiful playing I have ever heard on a steel guitar. I truly love this album. My favorite is the one where that incredible Hawaiian lady (name much too long to remember) sings with Jerry performing backup that sends chills down my spine.

I think you are referring to Nina Kealihiwahamana...
Try it: "KAY-AA-LEE-HEE-WAA-HAA-MAA-NAA"
She is a lovely lady, rather petite with a fantastic voice. Was featured on Hawai'i Calls for many years.

Hi guys: it's interesting how things happen. I have all those Maple recordings listed, in fact, I had many copies of several of them, gave them away to interested parties. There was a very popular second hand LP three-store chain in Toronto known as The Vinyl Museum, the owner's name has slipped my memory. He must have bought all the leftover stock from Maple, as Vinyl Museum had dozens of them for fifty cents apiece. Every time I dropped into Toronto, I used to pick up a dozen or so. Geo

Thanks for posting that list, Keoki! I've been wondering what the other titles were in that series. I have 4, so that means 12 more to go! And, I know a bit more about "Maple" now, too. Great thread with a neat looking guitar.
