If anyone is interested, the latest edition of TapeOp Magazine has a cover photo of Daniel Lanois' hands on his Sho-Bud, including a "helper sheet", and it looks like he plays with out picks...A friend of mine saw him in Austin a few weeks ago and said he played some really nice stuff on the pedal steel.

And for anyone who records at home (or a studio), TapeOp magazine is a GREAT magazine, and domestic subscriptions are FREE. (Free)

I just read the article. Daniel gives a lot of good info about his way of recording. Very interesting. Tape Op is an excellent magazine. As a Pro Tools user, I find the tips and reviews invaluable.

Ooh! I can hardly wait for my issue to get here. I'm a fan of Lanois' material and saw him recently on his Nashville tour stop. He played a few amazing instrumentals on his steel and remarked near the end of the set how gratifying it was to play his Sho-Bud in its city of origin. As for the article, I'm really interested to read his thoughts about recording; his ability to capture a vibe on tape (all of Wrecking Ball, for example) fascinates and inspires me.

Thanks for the heads-up!

Jon, Too funny! I thought it interesting that Daniel's "helper tape" was way up on the high frets, like maybe he gets a little lost up there.. Tape OP is without a doubt the best bargain in the world for recording heads. Written from the perspective of the in-the-trenches and often on a budget small studio owner, with real world reviews and interviews, and a fourth class sub is FREE. Can't beat it. Anybody who's into recording should definitely check it out- tapeop.com

I can't add too much to this thread, except to say;
During this summer's Ottawa Blues Fest, reviewers wrote up Daniel Langlois' set as one of the top 10 "special moments" any of them had experienced during a live show.
Some compared it to the electric vibe of an early 70's Bruce Cockburn set at Cafe Hibou (a legendary coffee house) or an early Yorkville performance by Ian and Sylvia.
I wasn't there. I was giggin 3 blocks away at the Rainbow, for $68 minus Scotch Whiskey at the Sunday Jam. I also managed to miss Big Sandy and Robert Randolph, all of whom garnered stellar reviews.
When some hard-nosed reviewer notes someone's performance as "one of those special moments", you have to take notice.
(And they always made mention of his pedal steel work as well). Tres cool.
