Everytime I see a post that ask the "who is the Best" Here is my take on this. Anyone
with the passion to sit behind our great instrument is the best! Thats right, It takes a special person to devote all of thier wakeing moments and sometimes in thier dreams looking for that certain lick or run.
So who is the BEST. STEEL GUITAR PLAYERS!!!

And just WHAT really can be termed as "the best"? Who determines it ? As inferred above, everyone is the "best" at what they do. There are those who are outstanding and obviously possess more ability than others however, should that be scored against those with lesser ability, yet possessing a unique talent of their own ? Those who are deemed "the best" are usually the first to deny it. I have no time for this "best" nonsense. Each of us are individuals with our own interpretation of playing an amazing instrument...the steel guitar, (pedal or standard). JMHO

With much due respect, I have no problem with "best".

Of course it is subjective, but then so is most anything. And ratings have been used since time began.

The likes of:

Jesse Owens

Ted Williams

Vladimir Horiwitz

Yasha Heifitz

Enrico Caruso

Joe Dimagio

Chet Atkins

Barbara Streisand

StPaul of Tarsus

Earl Scruggs

Jerry Douglas (Dobro)

Johann Strauss

Winston Churchill

Jerry Byrd (non-pedal Steel)

Bing Crosby

Bette Davis

Ravi Shankar

Gordy Howe

Johnny Unitas

And last, but NOT least;

BUDDY EMMONS (pedal steel)

bespeaks in accord with "rating" individuals for their merits, acheivments and talents.

Each one of the above has been considered by many as "THE greatest" (in their respective field) that has ever been.

And this list is only a sampling. There are artists, race car drivers, stunt pilots, Golfers, mandolin players, Cellists, News commentators, teachers, Congressmen, etc, etc, etc.

Buddy Emmons is THE greates steel guitarist in the entire world. NO one, and I mean NO one will EVER be as great. AND that includes those yet unborn. Which is the exact words said about Horowitz by one of England's most noted critics.

If a person feels it is in some way "demeaning" or "delineating" (to all the other players), when we call individuals the greatest, simply ask THEM.

Buddy Charleton told me, "Buddy Emmons is the greatest player ever". I consider Buddy Charleton to be the second greatest!!

I have heard sportscaster after sportscaster and player after player, for years, say that Ted Williams is the greatest hitter who has ever been.

I have heard singers say the same about Barbara Streisand. And the same goes for all listed above.

So I simply have NO problem in calling Buddy Emmons the greatest steel guitar player EVER

May God bless all the above; and ALL of you, and let's thank him for the blessing of talents.

carl

Think about this:

Hypothetically, if all of the steel guitar players considered to be "great" were giving two hour sets, simultaneously, in separate rooms at a huge convention center, who would draw the greatest audience, if those attending were steel guitar players and steel guitar enthusiast?

A friend who had the honor of being scheduled right after Buddy Emmons at a past ISGC told me,
"Al least now I can say Buddy was my opening act".

Years ago,a well known, professional steel player made a boastful statement in my prescence. He said,"Buddy Emmons, why I can whistle harmony to anything he ever did,in my sleep!" As far I know, he hasn't yet!
Another point...Buddy would not have made such a statement about the "other guy".

I was amazed to read a few posts before "Buddy Emmons" was actually mentioned.
Many Players can emulate the chops......
When I hit an Emmons lick on the Band Stage and get the grin from the rest of the band, I feel like such a thief for momentarily impostering the credit for something that my musical mind could only copy, not create. Emmons does it all. Emmons Writes Classics, his tone is unbelievable, He is so talented in every aspect of the Steel Guitar. What a treat it is to have this guy around, and on top of this, Buddy will even show you how to do everything he does in his underpriced courses ....go figure! There's no end to this guy. Emmons is the easily the best.

All Of the anwswers were interesting to read, even those who kinda seemed to think there was something wrong with asking the question. However, I think from reading all the responses Buddy appears to still be the King. I figured whoever I liked to put a tape of the most riding down the highway in my tape player would be my pick so I chose Herby but obviously I likem all!

Rick- Collins-Hypothetically with two great players in two separate rooms as you say. That would be a hard choice but..

If Maurice "Reece" Anderson was in one of those rooms. That is where I would be. No doubt about it........al
