I can tell you all that Pete Finney did a great job in Furuvik tonight, both at E9 and C6. Pete and The Billy Block Western Beat Band did a really good job backing first Monte Warden and then Danni Leigh, and I guess that they must have lots of picking experience to be that good.
They all seem to go the bold full-speed-ahead-from-the-first-note method, instead of the anxious swedish take-it-easy-and-don´t-make-any-mistakes method, that actually leads to more mistakes and less music than what your real potential is.
I´ll go back tomorrow and listen to them backing Stonewall Jackson and Heather Myles too.
The Furuvik festival is the highlight of the entire year!

Pete has always beem one of my favorite road players. He is a great steel guitar player. I saw him several times with Patty Loveless and once with Jo Dee Messina. I do hate him though (not really), he always gets the good gigs.

One of my favorite pieces of backup steel is the break on Patty Loveless' hit, "Blame It On Your Heart". It's some real tight playing with the lead player and it's Pete on steel.

You all are just too kind! I got up this morning in a jet-lagged haze after 22 hours of travel getting back from Sweden and it's sure nice to read this stuff. We had a fantastic time over there, and met so many nice folks. It was my second time in Norway and Sweden and I would go back anytime.
For you American forumites, I'm getting ready to go out on Pam Tillis's fall tour, so if you're in the neighborhood...

thanks again,
Pete

Pete - I´ve sent 4 picture heavy mails to you, so I hope your mailbox and modem can handle 2½ MB whithout getting a bad asthma.
It´s pics full of pretty girls named Heather and Danni very close to you, so open carefully, he, he!
They (the pics) are not copyrighted, so you may use them as you like; I don´t know the conditions for the girls, however.
If I had 10 fingers on each hand I would play like you, BTW.
Anders

Thanks again Anders... though I think if I had 10 fingers on each hand I might think about playing keyboards!

And Richard, I couldn't resist taking the gig with Pam; given my history (redheaded female singers seem to be my specialty!). Seriously, I've always loved her stuff and been a fan (and acquaintance) so I'm psyched. By the way, Tim Sergent will still be doing the gigs she does with her Dad, I'll be doing all the ones where she's on her own.

A little off the subject, but I recently played steel and Dobro on a few demos for Monte Warden -- some really great new original tunes. He's really a talented guy --how was he received at this concert?

Wow. I didn't know. Thanks for the info. Although Pete's listed as an "additional musician" on the CD, Paul Franklin and Sonny Garrish are listed under "steel guitar." Pretty confusing.

Patty's my all-time favorite female singer, and her band during that period was great. "Blame It On Your Heart" is one of my favorite songs by her.

That steel break is a personal favorite of mine too. Nice to know who played it. Great job Pete.

Boo, did you play on a song called "Without your Love"? It sounds like Monte might have been listening to some Dire Straits with Paul Franklin... Anyway that's great playing.

Oh, and to answer your question, Monte went over well but not as well as Heather Myles and especially Danni Leigh. Though those 2 aren't as well known in the U.S., in Sweden they eached topped popularity polls as favorite female country singer, they've played a lot in Europe. Stonewall Jackson went over well too because he has such a history and the country audiences there are very respectful of that.

Surprisingly many people over here know their country music history and past and present artists remakably well. It sometimes seemes like people who lives far from something they like a lot, get to know a lot more about it than people who have it right under their nose.
Lots of tourists from central Europe come here to to look at nature and listen to the silence, and that´s something that noone would ever think of here as something remakable.
Falun has the world´s oldest stock sharing campany, Falu copper mine, over 700 years old, and a big majority of us who live here have never even been on a sight seeing there.
Maybe that´s at least part of an explanation why country music is so dear to many of us over here. You don´t know how lucky you are in the honky-tonk belt!

Hey, Pete --

Yes, I played both steel and Dobro on "Without Your Love." Did you play that in his set? I also played on a ballad called (I think) "Until It Happens to You" -- a really beautiful tune -- did he play that one?

Unfortunately, I never met Monte -- I overdubbed my parts in a studio in Los Angeles. I've only met him over the phone and he seemed like a really great person. I'm sure you had a blast backing him up!

Oh yeah, I forgot to say that I used to play a lot with Billy Block when he still lived in Los Angeles. Another great guy!

Out of curiosity Pete, what color is your wife's hair? If not red, have you asked her to change it for you? Seriously now, you are a great player and deserve all the red head stars you can get to play for.

Direct TV was running a Free View concert featuring Allison Moorer live at 12th and Porter in Nashville. Pete, you played some tasty steel on the show, my friend. Only thing I can't figure is how come you look the same as you did 25 years ago, and me, well....
