AOL has a radio click on the menu and Southern Gospel is one of the stations and they play great stuff and quite a bit of them have steel. They played a song by Mike Bowling and the steel sounded like it could be Tommy and I have to have that CD.

I play Dobro with one Southern Gospel group and steel guitar with another one. There is more demand for steel players in Gospel music in my area than country music and not enough steel players to fill the needs.

I guess I'm what you could call a country/southern gospel steel player. I once auditioned for a local country band and they said I was too country. I thought about it and they are right. I play only in religious settings now and I think that Southern Gospel and the traditional country sound go hand in hand. Anyone who thinks that the steel shouldn't be in church need only to read Psalms 33-2.

Joseph, I wish you were here. I am with two Gospel groups at the present time. I was with another one until they slowed down for the piano player to have a baby. I got called last weekend by both of the groups and had to choose which one to go with so I went with the one I thought had the greatest need. They other group had a 6 string player and the one I went with did not. I have noticed in Gospel the steel guitar takes bonafide solos and fills more like the old days in country music and so much country only uses the steel for flavor just to warm it up. Certainly not true of all country music but a lot of it anyway.

Joseph, in addition to playing with the Gospel groups on Sunday nights I play Dobro
for an opry type show on Friday nights behind Jerry Newberry who plays steel. On Saturday nights I play steel and Dobro at the "Little O' Opry" in Westfork to a full house. I have been playing that spot for l2 years. My point is this that there are about
6 opry shows in my immediate area playing either every Fri or every Sat night. These opry show are a lot of fun to play. You might consider helping in starting an opry show in your area. Find some other guys who want to play and go for it. This is a great entertainment for music fans who want to go to a non alcohol, non smoking family show.
It would give you something to look forward to every weekend. If you need any advise on starting something like this just email me.
I am sorry for getting off topic, however, we play a lot of old country and Gospel at these opry shows.

Joseph, you need to find a good bass player and get on the steel guitar. I would suggest you check with local Churches and ask if they use a bass player in there services. There are many great bass players in Churches that are playing nothing else and would be happy for the chance to play a family type show on Friday nights.
It's worth a try, the bass player thats waiting for the chance probably has some friends who he plays in Church with that would like a chance to play also. I have seen and heard some absolutely great musicians in Church praise bands.

Me too! My first public playing was with a gospel group. I have played and recorded with several gospel groups since then and I still love it! I did a session last night with another group. I have just completed my first gospel instrumental cd called
"Precious Memories" and I am working on another one. I thank God for the ability to play his music.

Count me in! There is certainly a lot of steel in southern and country gospel. I have a Fri/Sat gig, 49 weeks per year, and can play all the steel I want! The greatest gig, and IMHO, the greatest music!

On the older Hinson recordings, you will find Sonny Garrish, John Hughey, Jack Smith and Scotty Sanders. Kenny Hinson was not only the greatest gospel singer ever, he could have been the greatest singer ever!
