For Sacred Steel fans, I just saw a clip of Robert Randolph playing duing the entertainment segment of CNN Headline news. Hopefully it will repeat several times this weekend. Although it was pedal steel, it was still nice to see steel guitar on national television! Robert is a phenominal player! I've seen him before on Austin City Limits.
I also posted this in the Pedal section (where it probably belongs) but put it here too, for those of us who never leave No Peddlers. |

RR is appropriate here in No Peddlers. He approaches his 13-string as if it were a great big E7 lap steel. He only occassionally hits a pedal, and I've seen him do whole songs standing up and never touching a pedal. Come to think of it, when I play B6 stuff on my universal, I hardly ever touch the pedals, but that's just 'cause I don't know no better. |

Thanks David, I didn't want to get booted out of here for posting a pedal topic
On Austin City Limits, he was standing and dancing while playing! Perfect intonation, too on that pretty red Sierra! Looks like he uses a Stevens type bar-??
I've never seen steel guitar taken to the dimension that he takes it. He rocks! |

It's cool that a steeler of any kind is out front infront of the public eye. I think guy's that are already deeply intrenched in blues rock are less likely to be that impressed with RR' choice of notes than say someone who hasn't studied the genre a great deal. I know I'm that way with the jam band stuff I've heard RR doing. It sounds like you have to catch his live act to fully get the whole package maybe? I didn't know he was standing and dancing when he was playing or the fact that he isn't using his peddles that much? He sounds like he is really working the crowd with his great stage presence and having to exploit the non pedal aspect of his chosen tuning so he can dance and sing while playing. I'm starting to understand where he's coming from better now I think and will try and get my girl to go see him with me if he comes to town. |

Please see my thread in the Steel Players section as to what the big deal is on RR and where I can be convinced. Thanx |

The bar is a cross between a Stevens bar and a round bar. It's got 3 grooves in it for holding and would be great for any type of lap steel, I think.
I bought one from Carter. |

Does it have a bullet nose? I never had luck with the Stevens bar, because I can't keep it from getting caught in the strings.... |

Check it out, Jeff.

I got one a while ago 'cause I was real curious. I don't use it but I could see working with it if/when I spend more time on lap or other non-pedal stuff. Just don't need it with my regular playing. |
