A fellow Forum Fellar, Larry Lenhart (passing thru on a visit from Oklahoma) & I went to check out a local club which I'd heard had added a steel to the band. As we stepped in, we commented how much the steel player looked so much like Hal Rugg. When we got in, & ready to seat down, our eyes adjusted to the light, I said, "That IS Hal Rugg".
Yes, sir, boys & girls, - Hal Rugg, World Class Steel Player, Hall of Fame Member & one hecka' nice guy is playing at the Maverick Club, (on Tanqe Verde, just west of Kolb Rd.). Hal visited with us on a couple breaks & it was a treat. He's there Tues.- Sat. nites, for the next couple of weeks or so. It's such a fresh drink of cool water in this otherwise steel/country music desert, to have such a great guy & player right here & on my side (east) of town.
Before this, I'd have to track down where Billy Easton is playing or have to travel up to Cave Creek (N. of PHX) to hear Danny Snead to get a steel fix of such caliber.
Anyway - to Hal - great to see you here & to any of you guys & gals wanting some sun, fun, warmth & great steel playin' - Come On Down - give me a holler & I'll buy the first round.
BTW, Hal's got the legendary "Buddy Emmons & Hal Rugg" videos available down here.[This message was edited by John Hanusch on 15 June 2003 at 07:17 AM.] |

Yep, that's Hal. The Vince Moreno Band is the one I used to play with before the old Maverick burned down and Vince casually asked me if I'd be interested in playing again for three nights a week. Now there's a moral dilema: do I take the job or do I tell Vince that one of the best players in the world has retired to Tucson and would likely take the job in a heartbeat?
I opted to do the right thing and I called Hal and hooked him up with Vince and now you can walk into the Maverick and hear the best.
Hal tunes better than I play and is a great guy to boot, so if you're in the Tucson area stop and see them. I believe Hal will be doing only Thurs-Fri-Sat with Moreno, so check ahead.
Now when the position for new Pope opens up I won't be so giving. . . . |

Thanks, John, for your good "bump" response and doing the right thing . You're correct, Hal is only playing there Thurs.- Sat. nites.
And now on Sunday nites, at Eddie's, 8510 E. Broadway, you can hear a very good band (the DustDevils, I believe) with good steel playing by Dan Hunter(??)- till first part of August. |

Received from Ray Blowers in email: quote: I am the guitarist with the Dust Devils. Not being a Steel man, I wanted to say "thank you" but didn't want to pay the registration fee to do so. (call me cheap! *grin*)
Although Dan will only be with us until early August, Steel will continue to be heard there every Sunday night. Dan has been kindly filling in for our regular man, Roy Brown. Roy's "day job" (as a law officer, we are proud to have him) required him to take a hiatus.
I would also like to invite any of the Steel Guitar Forum members to speak up and say "hello" any time they stop by Eddie's.

Who is recording those fine Moreno/Rugg gigs, and how do I get my copies?
