Jerry Douglas and his wife Jill flew into Charleston for a show with my band, The Blue Dogs, on December 29. We spent 2 days of rehearsals and then the show. He learned and played many of our songs; songs from other artists who joined the show and The Blue Dogs played several of his songs. Alison Krauss joined the show for a song as well. Jerry, the ultimate musician, was just one of the guys during all of this. I can't say enough about what a great person he is..not to mention the best dobro player on earth. This show is an annual sold out benefit show that has raised over a half a million dollars to fund children's cancer research at our local MUSC hospital..What a treat!

I didn't ask him if he had ever played pedal steel. I would assume he's at least played some. He did bring his lap steel and pedal board, mounted on it is the Fishman Aura pedal in his name. |

You are right about Jerry being "one of the guys"
Several years ago (maybe 12 or more) Jerry came to NY and I loaned him a pre war National New Yorker for a photo shoot for his upcoming CD.....he came to my store to pick up the guitar and it was like getting together with an old school buddy...an unpretentious and down to earth guy (he even offered to leave a deposit for the guitar)...a few days later he came by to return the guitar with his wife Jill....they were just so nice....it was a memorable experience for me..... |

Jerry is one of my all-time favorite Dobro players. One of my favorite Dobro solos he recorded can be heard on Steve Wariner's song "Life's Highway". One Monday night in 2018, I was playing a jam session, playing both pedal steel and Dobro, and all the musicians were taking a break, so I decided to use the Dobro for the second half of the jam session, and I sat down with my Gretsch Boxcar Dobro, and taught myself how to play the Dobro intro and solo heard on "Life's Highway". I'm also a huge fan of the Dobro work he did with Alison Krauss and Union Station! |

What I've heard (2nd hand) is that he was interested and spent some time learning it, but felt the more he played PSG, the more his RH hand thumb lost the power and drive he needed to play dobro at the level he does. |
