Has Tommy White made the video for C6 to follow the Hot Licks & Cool tips for the E9th video? If so, where can I get it?

Not to my knowledge - I wish he'd find the time to do it!

There was more information packed into that first couple of minutes 'intro' to Tommy's E9 tape than most previous instruction tapes laid end to end - for me, he could have just played for thirty minutes and left it at that.

More, please!!!

And, Roger, what about the C neck stuff at the END!!!!

HOLY COW!!!

I agree completely. Wish he'd explained that stuff on the tape. I think that'd be an excellent starting point with some of the 9th string root Ma7/Ma9 stuff for advanced E9 and whatever he was doing on the back neck at the end of the video. Incredible stuff.

Tommy? (we're waiting )

I agree with you guys completly Tommy's playing is great. I asked him about a year ago when the C6th video would be out. He said that it was still in the plans but he had not the time. I think I have wore out the beginning and end of that tape.

You know what? I'm pleased in a way that he didn't explain it all. I worked at it and found it for myself, and I learned more about E9th in those two weeks than I had in ten years! It convinced me that the ninth string, and having a 'lower' on it, along with my pedal one ('Day') is what really opens up that neck. I've found a lot more stuff of my own since that 'epiphany', based on those pulls.

Personally, I like to learn by listening, and I'm not particularly interested in a player showing me a 'lick', note by note, as most tapes do - someone played TW's tape to me and I knew I had to get it for myself just so I could woodshed that section of it!

Thanks a lot, Tommy - it'd be hard for me to put a value on those precious few minutes on that video of yours! You're a very clever chap.....

In some ways I agree with you, Roger. HOWEVER, I wouldn't necessarily want the play by play as much as I'd like for him to explain the approach or the rationale. The licks that roll off the fingers is one thing -- anybody with a decent ear can cop licks. The concepts that spawned the ideas and, thus, the licks, is quite another beast. I'm much more interested in how a player approaches the instrument and tuning(s) than in the actual licks. Kinda the 'give them a fishing rod' vs 'give them fish' idea.

Larry

That's close to what I meant - you put it better than I did. If I ever go for a lesson with someone, it'll have to be someone who can impart their musical philosophy so that I can glean from it what I may. As you say, stealing licks is just a question of 'ear'...

The last time I saw Buddy play with the Everlys, I felt as though I was in the presence of that 'higher philosophy' (an inept phrase, but all I can summon just now) - even within the limitations of a Vegas-style 'greatest hits show', Emmons scattered musical gemstones throughout the set, leaving me wondering where he draws it from. Don and Phil rarely featured steel on their hit singles, yet Buddy leaves one feeling as though it's a vital ingedient.

Tommy comes the closest to possessing this same quality, in my opinion.

It was the stuff at the end of the E9th tape and Tommy's indication of the C6th video pending that interested me. The E9th tape was made in 99 so I was hoping the C6th video would be out by now.

If anyone knows Tommy, would you remind him to make the video and send me the first copy?

I too was blown away by the Tommy White video and still play the (few) licks I was able to lift off of it. The intro and outro are stunning, and alone are worth the price of the tape. I hope he does a follow - up video someday.

cheers,
Drew

Yes, and I have that P/P that Tommy said was the best sounding steel he has ever had except the restored Sho-Bud that his wife bought him and I never play it. May be for sale soon.
