Free lanced Friday with a local Corpus group (Dennis Gilley) that opened up for Kevin Fowler (with my buddy and Forumite Glenn Suchan on steel). Had never heard the band in person. Great group doing mostly originals and some covers. (by the way Glenn you did a great. great job).
Saturday night - no gig! So me and some of the band and wives did the next best thing. Drove up to the lake and caught Jake Hooker. Also had never heard Jake live - but have one of his CDs. He and group were true to form - solid Tx style country music. Smiley Reynolds on drums, Bobby Flores on fiddle (and steel..) and Dickey Overby on steel - need I say anything more about these guys. Dickey continues to awe me, and I've been listening to him since the early seventies.
Great, great players.
Now to harass Bobby a little (excellent fiddler, excellent guitarist, and I hear plays great piano, he sings leads and harmonies. But heard him last night for the first time playing steel. Also excellent! This guy scares me....
A great weekend of C&W...nowhere but Texas. Sorry to those who live outside the state.
