Last week as I was just about to leave the house for my "day job", my darling wife reminded me to "don't forget that you have to take Jane, (our 2yr old black female german shepard), to the feed store tonight for the weekly vet clinic for the rest of her shot's and tonights the last day or we have to start over and I'm going to be at a staff meeting with my nurses, so you have to do it"! After 27yrs, I'm smart enough to know when I don't stand a chance no matter what my excuse is, so with a "Yes dear", I was out the door.
Took Jane after work and when we were standing in line with the rest of the little fluffy, yappy, bedroom slippers that she looks at like "oh boy, snack food", I noticed a flyer posted in the window for "the Rick Tucker band" playing thursdays at a club right here in town that I didn't even know was there. I use to work some gigs with Rick and had not seen him for 10yr's at least. But my hands were full with Jane and I didn't really get a good look at the address, and I didn't have my reading glasses with me.
Yesterday, Thursday, I remembered seeing the flyer and thought I'd try to go see old Rick. Called the feed store and they gave me the address. So I went by to check the club out on my way home as it is about 3 min's for my house and I go right by it on my way home. As I pulled into the lot, I saw 2 pick-up trucks backed up to the doorway and thought "cool, they must be here already unloading equipment". I was right, and Rick was glad to see me. He ask if I was still pickin and I ask if there was room on the stage for me to sit-in. He said "You bet" So I went home to walk Jane, and grab my rig. Got back about 7:30 for an 8:00 start time and unloaded my gear and got set-up on stage right. The guitar player was stage left tuning up with his back to me and when he turned around and I saw his guitar strap with "Bruno" on it, I realized that it was the legendary "Al Bruno"!!!!
The next four hours were the most fun I've had on stage in quite some time getting to play with Al all night.
When I got home after the gig, Jane got an extra treat cookie and I went to sleep with a big smile on my face!

I've known Al Bruno since the mid sixties. He's always a kick to work with. The last time I worked with him, he asked me if I knew the definition of the word dissonance? I said I think so, but what's your definition? Answer: two steel players trying to play in unison!
Al Bruno in the fifties, played lead guitar for Conway Twitty. He's one of the finest players you'll ever see, and one of the nicest guys around.
He also told me that he told Jay Dee Maness that he was going to play steel. Jay Dee told him he could only have two pedals. That would be enough challenge for Al, according to Jay Dee. "He and Al have been friends for 40 years." Boy are we getting old or what? |
