Stacy Phillips's book 'Complete Dobro Player' on 'Mel Bay' might be a good place to start.
There's also a truckload of instructional videos out there, but I've never checked them out so I can't recommend any special.

First do you play Steel ??? learn the chords then start in a chord 4th string hunt out the melody .. Havent found a good video for beginners . Jerry Douglas is too far advanced. Try Cindy Cashdollars video

i've just released volume one of my Beginning Dobro DVD set. it's designed for complete beginners. i agree that there isn't anything out there for the real beginner so i'm hoping this helps fill that void. i'm currently editing the second volume and hope to have it available soon. the first one covers gear, tone production, intonation, damping/muting, vibrato, phrasing melodies, scale patterns, hammer-ons and pull-offs, and includes 3 tunes to put all this stuff into, wabash cannonball, weave and way and wildwood flower. if you wish to order or want more info shoot me an email for details.

I've been learning now for about two months. I play pedal steel, so scales are not new to me. I ran out and bought instructional videos from Jerry Douglas, (very advanced, but it does make you try very hard.) Rob Ickes, (Talks much too much and goes very fast, and tells you right out that he does not have the patience to teach note for note, which is what I need. There are two videos to buy here) and I bought others such as, "You Can Teach Yourself Dobro". (Mel Bay by Janet Davis) and "Dobro, The beginners Series". (By someone named Tim McCasland, who in my opinion need lots of practice) Cindy Cashdollar does have a good one for the very beginner. I think I'd buy that one first if I were starting all over again. I also suggest you get the Paul Beard Set up & Maintenance video. It is packed with information about keeping your Dobro in good working condition. The problem I found with some of these videos is that the players were very good, and made it look so easy. I said a million times, "I will never be able to do that", but I keep trying, and I keep surprising myself with little advances. I'm getting better, and you will too. Whatever you buy, practice, practice, practice. John Hughey told me the same thing one time about the pedal steel. It works...Good luck.

Thanks guys. I do play psg and hope I'm able to get this started pretty quickly. I'm also neck-deep in a couple C6th courses. This should be complicated, but I'll give it my best shot. Thanks for the encouragement.

I just read the header for this thread
"I just bought a Dobro and I can't get up" and my immediate thought was
"They are not that heavy"
I had this mental image of somebody pinned to the chair by the guitar, calling for help, arms and legs waving like a beetle lying on it's back, just managing to fire off a desperate posting to the forum.
Sorry, maybe I take things too literally!
Cheers
Dave

I also read the header and thought of suggesting Stacy Phillip's "The Dobro Book", and a prescription for Viagra.

I should also not take these things too literally.
