Well, must be about time to ask my annual question.
Does anyone know of what happened or where Jimmy Collins is?
Mostly Californian based, he seemed to have possibly come from the Northwest into the Californina scene in the 1960s.
In the early 1960s he worked around the Northern Ca. scene, did a stint with bandleader Big Jim DeNoone, he later worked with a Modesto group with Dennis Hromek, Bobby Wayne and Dave Allen.
This group was hired by Freddie Hart in late '65, then by Wynn Stewart in 1966-67.
The group folded and Jimmy went on to work at the Bright Torch in SoCa.
During 1968-69 the band were Jimmy Collins (steel), Peaches Price (drums), Robert 'Bobby Lee' Crigger on piano, Tony Goodman and a guitar player.
After this info gets quite scarce, so if anyone can help out......
Thanks in advance
Jason

Jason; I hope this doesn't go off topic but is Dave Allen the same steel man we have been looking for for years ?? I wish I could give you some info on your question but I can't.

I used to go jam with Jimmy Collings in a small club near Yakima, WA around 1975 or so. It seems to me he might have been laying low (something about an ex-wife?). He was a great player, I really enjoyed playing with him. He was the first 'echoplex master' I ever heard up close.

Paul, no..this guy is a drummer.
That group of pcikers also recorded with Wynn Stewart:
# October 24, 1966 Nashville Tennessee. Producer Marvin H. Hughes
Ol' What's Her Name (ST 2737) - Fuzzy Owens
It's Such A Pretty World Today (ST 2737) - Dale Noe
Unfaithful Arms (ST 2737) - Wynn Stewart
Let's Pretend We're Kids Again (ST 2737) - Bobby Wayne/Dave Pittman
Session crew: Wynn Stewart (vocals, guitar), Robert ‘Bobby Wayne’ Edrington (guitar), Jimmie Collins (steel), Dennis Dean Hromek (bass), David ‘Dave’ William Allen (drums), Jim Pierce (piano), and the Anita Kerr Singers (backing vocals).
Dan, thanks for that info, that's the latest I've heard on Mr. Collins.

Jason,
I remember a while back getting involved in trying to determine if the Jimmy Collins in the Yakima, Washington area, (Moxee, actually), in the early 1970's was the same one as the California one. I wasn't able to come up with an answer, either.
The one I met in Washington was playing a white Fender steel with a guitar neck bolted to the back, and had some pretty wild licks. He was working a trio most of the time, with Ed Kohler, the owner of the bar.
If somebody who knew the California Jimmy Collins, thought they could recognize his playing, I have a cassette tape of him playing at the Blue Moon in Moxee. The steel is UP FRONT, so you wouldn't miss it.
I can post a few mp3 samples on a web page if you think that might clear this up. Let me know.
Take Care,
Les

He was definitely the guy. The Jimmy Collins I played with was for sure the player on the Wynn Stewart sessions, he had the sound, the touch. He was unique, influenced by Mooney and Emmons, for sure, but his own player. I remember that guitar that he played Thumbs style...

Sounds like the same J.C. I interviewed Bobby Wayne a while ago and totally forgot to ask if he knew where Jimmy was at. |
